Replacing Gearbox, Anything Else Do Be Done At Same Time?

Recommended Posts

EnglishRob

Hi folks,

Well after a month of waiting for a mate of mine to swap the gearbox on my 205 (not to mention being royally screwed over by him) I'm now looking to get a local mechanic to sort my gearbox out (well, assuming there's no one near Torquay who knows what they're doing and would like the work?).

I've also got a leak on the engine which only appears to leak when the car is running. From what I can remember the oil pressure light would come on when accelerating or cornering (I've only really taken it out on the South West meet up to Dartmoor at the beginning of August). It doesn't appear that the engine leaks when the car isn't running (although I haven't checked the oil since the gearbox went, I had topped it up just before it went).

So apart from swapping the gearbox which has blown a hole in it I wondered if there is anything else I should get done at the same time and money while the gearbox is off?

A mechanic that my dad knows said about getting the clutch done at the same time. I've had a look at GSF and Euro Car Parts and it appears that Euro Car Parts is cheapest for a BE1 1.9 clutch. After reading up a bit I see someone mentioned about getting drive shaft seals done, and I figured again since they're about a tenner for the pair so I guessed these would be worth doing too.

On reading up one the oil leak problem, someone suggested to a similar sounding problem that it could be the crank seals, I wondered how easy these are to do and if the engine has to be removed to do it?

The only other thing I can think of at the moment is the cam belt which I haven't a clue when it was last done and the engine has done about 148,000 miles.

Sorry to hear about being seen off by your so called mate :)

If you're replacing the clutch with a new one its best to get the flywheel skimmed, reduces the chance of judder when releasing the clutch when in gear.

So if you remove the flywheel you can then get the crankseal replaced! :D

I'd be happy to help you out! B)

As mentioned above, best at least looking at the clutch while the gearbox is off - however if its got plenty of meat left on it there's no point changing it for the sake of it.

However, I'd also change the clutch release bearing as a matter of course, saves whipping the box off again to replace just a small and cheap (about £10ish) part.

i just did my back crankshaft oil seal yesterday. for 15 quid it would be stupid not to replace this.

Cool thanks where abouts are you Luggy?

Part of the problem is the 205 won't move at the moment, not to mention the battery has gone flat too (it's been sat for a month) although I'm sure I can get the battery charged up somehow.

Where would I get the flywheel skimmed? Would an engine shop do the job?

I'm a bit short of cash at the moment so I'm trying to do this on a budget. The problem I have is being self employed I need the car to get to jobs, so hardly any jobs means hardly any money.

Hmm, just did a quick search of eBay without any luck. I knew I should have kept that old knackered 1.6 engine.

Do you know how much roughly they go for, and just wondering, what's the benefit?

Thanks Dan, I kept badgering my mate for about a month and he always made excuses about getting the car over to his garage (about 6 miles away from where I live).

This might be the kick up the arse I need to get my own set of tools and learn a bit more about how cars work.

Cool, I wasn't sure if it needed to be done or not. I wonder if I could get one from Euro Car Parts and if it's not needed get my money back.

I did think that if it's something that could be done when the gearbox is off it's probably worth it. I'm wondering if this might also resolve the oil leak when the engine is running too.

Thanks for you replies guys :-)

Price varies alot as with many things tbh...

They're alot lighter that the 1.9 item, every little helps! the Xu7 ones are similar too.

Ahh I see, I'll have to keep an eye out. I have a feeling that for now though I'll have to make do with getting the gearbox and seals done as I'm desperate to get the car back on the road.

At least I know what to look for now :-)
