Carpet

I intend to change the red interior of my Cherry Red Gti, far too much red. I have black door cards from a TD and black full leather seats but now want to fit a black carpet and console. (Just have to find them).

Looking for tips and hints about fitting the carpet. My cynical side tells me that what should be a straight forward task never turns out the way it should.

What needs to be removed that is not obvious, even I can guess the seats need to come out, and where should the new carpet be fixed. Is glue required?

Any tips even the most obvious will help.

Hi, theres no glue involved, the carpet is moulded to fit straight in and it has a few clips here and there, its quite a simple job really

once ya got seats out and part of the bottom dash, hand brake, gear stick area. No problem :)

I agree red car and carpet can look tooo much red, thgough it suits the other colours really well, i get compliments to

on the colour of it.

one of the first things i did was got rid of the red carpet, its a nice easy job with no glue and afew clips under the dash. your need to unbolt the front seatbelt bases, also remove the front and base of the rear seats and the bits of trim around the gearstick and handbrake.

Thats very similar to the look I want, your leather seats exactly the same as mine. The door cards I have are from a TD with black vinyl and the black carpet material as a square in the middle, no red whatsoever.

1 - Remove rear seat bases including mounting brackets

2 - Remove front seats. Slide all the way forward to access rear torx bolts on the subframe, then slide back to get to the front ones. You might need to to tilt the seat forward mid way, until it's hovering at the highest point, to get access to the bolts. If you can't get a ratchet in there, stick the torx head in the bolt and use a spanner/ratchet spanner on it.

3 - Remove L shaped brackets at the sides of the shell, that support the subframes.

4 - Unbolt bottom seat belt mount, then wiggle and twist the bracket to withdraw it at it's rear point.

5 - Remove the handbrake surround. Have fun with this, the screws will probably be rusted in (from under the floor) and rounded off!

6 - Remove the gear knob. Twist it 90 degrees and pull it up, HARD! Don't smack yourself in the nose, or throw it at the sunroof, as it eventually lets go

7 - Remove the gearstick surround. 2 screws at the back, then slide the trim with gaiter up and off the gear stick.

8 - Remove lower part of the dash (you'll need to remove your headunit first). IIRC it's a nut at the rear (under the gear stick trim you just removed), a screw at each side of the front (right up under the dash. Pull the corner of the carpeted bit on the console back, near the little vents), and 2 nuts/bolts under the headunit/inside the top of the flappy cubby hole, that joins the lower and middle parts. I think that's all of the fixings :)

9 - Put the handbrake off (make sure the car is secured :D ) and stick it in reverse. You'll understand why when you do the next bit. Gently wiggle and pull the whole lower half of the console out from under the middle part of the dash. You do need to be both forceful and careful at the same time, but a lot of wiggling should get it free eventually.

10 - Pull back the door seals along the floor.

11 - use a screwdriver to lever off any carpet securing clips. Again, make sure you don't ping them off in to your face

12 - I'd remove the kick panels too, but you might be able to get away with just loosening them. But basically involves a screw on each, plus one long bolt on the drivers side and 2 on the passenger side that also hold the bonnet release catch in place. They are all a complete cock to refit ;)

13 - IIRC that should now be everything out of the way and you can pull the carpet out. There is no glue involved.

Further tasks - upon realising that your sound deadening has absorbed half of the UK's annual precipitation, pull it all out and bin it. Then treat any rust on the floor. Then investigate the source of the leak. Then fit new sound proofing (I bought a roll of stuff for about £20 and cut it to fit. No point spending hundreds on the OE moulded to shape stuff).

If your getting rid of the red carpet I suggest you offer it for sale here. Clean it up when it's out and see how much nicer it is

If you can't find a replacement carpet in black, just dye one. Preferably not a red one !

Agreed, wouldn't change it mate - the red carpet is one of the coolest things about the GTi.

Slightly on topic, slightly off.....I'll be changing my Black carpet, for Red. However, I don't like the way it cuts off under the rear seat for all to see when the car is stripped out. Im thinking about buying a lenght of red acoustic carpet (4mx1.5m)to do the whole car floor in. Any experience in this anyone?
