Track Day Noise Tests

Recommended Posts

HERMAN

I have carryed out a serch but with no joy so here goes.

I am rebuilding the engine in my 1.9 to a fairly standard spec exept for a lighter flywheel and head skim.

The car came with a Magnex 4 into 1 manifold and 2 box system.

It also came with a K&N cone filter kit which I plan to use with a new filter (old one ripped).

Now every track day that I have been on in the pass has had noise levels imposed upon it and as I have never used the 205 for a track day I was wondering if any body has had any problems with noise levels??

Now is the best time to change things before I get it put back together E.G. fit bigger silencers or go back to the air box system??

Thanks

Neil

With a fairly standard engine and 2 silencer exhaust system, you should pass the noice test no problem. Its best to go along to a local trackday and ask to be noise tested, most will oblige.

I would think you would be between 90-98db at 4500 rpm so fine for the majority of trackdays offered. Oulton is 105db i could run a straight pipe and pass there lol. Also dont worry about intake noise they dont measure that on the noise test so you will be fine.

would also have thought it would be fine (unless your silencers are particularly ineffective).

yours will be fine, but some engines are really noisy without the OE induction system fitted and can actually cause problems in some of these drive-by sound checks

My engine is a 1.9 with a magnex 4-1 and 2 silencer SS exhaust. Never had any problems with sound check. Last time I actually asked what db level was at Combe for eurofest and I was told 94bd at 4500rpm, or was it 4000rpm??? Either way, no problems. I think I get more noise from the carbs but combe doesnt have a drive by so cant comment on that.

Combe does have a drive by noise tester, somewhere along the pit straight, dixon got taken off in the afternoon at an all day track day which he had passed noise test for in the morning, he had to fit a new center section before he was alowed back out, this was in his old 205.

I have a magnex exhaust aswell, its very track day friendly between 90 and 96 on the days ive done

You shouldn't have a problem with that at all. A few figures for reference;

Std system on my 1.6, and was 86db tested at combe recently.

Another of my cars, a 1.9 has a 4branch mated to a std centre section and a Magnex backbox, and was tested a few weeks before at combe at 85db.

Both have green cone filters.
