Engine Box And All Front Suspension To Refit.

Recommended Posts

As title really, the engine rebuild is near complete which will see me with the engine on a stand and the flywheel and clutch to fit to it.

Everything else is ready to go back on. When I took apart I lifted the engine and box out in one go after removing the subframe and all suspension.

So I'm now in the position of putting it all back together and thinking about what's the best/easiest way of going about it?

Do I stick the box back on and then lift it in in one go mounting it on the upper and gearbox mounts then refit the subframe and bottom mount followed by the rest of the suspension or am I better off getting the subframe back on first and then dropping just the engine on the upper and lower mount and then fitting the box after?

After taking it out one go (on my own) I presume I won't have enough wiggle room to put the engine and box in as one with the sub frame on?

Everything that's going back on is new, coilovers, wishbones, driveshafts etc so it all needs building up, I didn't drop the lot off in one lump to re fit.

Initial plan is to do what I did to get it out but in reverse. Engine and box in as one on to top mount and gearbox mount then refit the rest.

Thoughts??

Are you fitting a Maniflow Mi exhaust? - Not sure whats happening with mine atm, btw.

If so. Fit that. Then all the subframe. Giving plenty of room check the rack is all tight and fitted properly with wishbones fitted (Check you have the bolts facing the right way, or else you'll be kicking yourself in the future). Then drop the engine in complete with the manifolds in, providing you have a crane that is.

Days work if you have all the parts and tools :)

got an engine crane?

the way I would do it is, Fit subframe, lower engine and box assembly in as one

(remove the transmission mounting bracket from the chassis leg to make it easier)

lower engine and fit rear mounting, raise transmission end and fit mounting, support engine with trolley jack and push engine backwards till the top right mounting arm can be fitted :)

then fit wishbones, strut+hub assemblies, then driveshafts.

So with the battery tray/gearbox mount removed I can drop the lot in in one go with the sub frame on. That sounds like a way to do it, I hadn't though that removing the mount would give more room, it's already off so that's ok.

As for a crane I went and hired one form HSS last time, not that cheap in the end, so will be hoping to find one I can borrow for less cash this time.

And Al I've been after a 4-2-1 as you know and may get one from Miles if I can justify the cost next month, otherwise it'll be the reangled one that was on it start with. That would have to go on before the the engine goes back in as it's simply a b*stard to get access with the way it's been modded.

Will bear in mind bolt orientation!

If the car is stripped on the front end that you need to refit all the suspension etc when you've done then why not drop the subframe off (if it isn't already off), fit the flywheel, clutch, gearbox etc to the engine & then position it underneath & lower the shell over the engine etc, bolt the drivers & gearbox mounts up & lift the shell so you can work underneath again fitting the maniflow manifold & the the subframe etc.

With the battery tray off its still a tight fit with the gearbox etc on the engine imo, especially if you've been painting the bay while its been in pieces.

Graham.
