kilauea 7 Posted September 23, 2008 Just phone Pug for a replacement resistor for the rad fan - the metal tube thing. (slow speed doesn't work anymore - assuming this is knackered). Pug want £20+ vat and have to order as they don't stock. Anyone know where else I can find one quick and cheap? Tried ebay nothing doing. ECP and GSF don't *seem* to stock them unless I am missing something. Thanks, Gaz
Baz 421 Posted September 23, 2008 I have a couple, if you really want one that is. Just wire it up so the fan's full speed rather than dual.

Baz 421 Posted September 23, 2008 Not really, you bridge the two wires that go to the resistor, as if it's always telling the fan to come on at full speed.

kilauea 7 Posted September 23, 2008 Sorted. Stuck some thick guage fuse wire into the socket so I can put a resistor on later if I want. Any long term ill effects of not running a slow-speed? Wear on fan maybe?
kyepan 291 Posted September 23, 2008 pug do them for not much, check the parts prices sticky

jackherer 543 Posted September 23, 2008 Any long term ill effects of not running a slow-speed? Wear on fan maybe? The low speed is just to make them quiet and civilised. I always remove them.
Theo205 0 Posted September 23, 2008 Living in a VERY hot country (42C+ in the summer) I had to run loads and loads of different fan setups for my 1.9gti. For a while I had installed a 2nd fan to help with the cooling and both were running at full speed. Whenever they were goin off, the electical load dropped the idle speed while you thought a 747 was about to take off nearby. After a while I did a general repair of the cooling system. New rad etc... An d I discovered that 1 fan was enough for cooling the engine down even under very high weather temps and in traffic. At that moment the fan was working at full speed on both phases of the rad switch and it was quite loud ... It didnt feel right. Some months ago I rewired everything to the original setup.Only thing I replaced was the resistor. I got a 100w / 1-Ohm resistor (5 quid, stronger and slightly lower impedance than original) and i wired it for the low speed. The low speed fan now cannot be heard while the engine is running and suprisingly it does a very good job cooling the engine in traffic etc, while the water temp gace works alot smoother than before (no up's and downs all the time) . I dont remember hearing the high speed fan since, even after pushing the engine quite hard. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/Theo...13092008001.jpg So my point is that as long as you have a properly maintained and tuned std. 8v engine, the original fan setup is quite enough and more civilised ...as long as its wired properly etc.... So my advice to you is since you didnt have any cooling problems get yourself a new resistor ( www.uk.farnell.com part.no. 1174282) and do a good wiring

Good point, as mine hardly ever comes on at all, low or full speed, i don't recall hearing or noticing it being on since replacing the rad, flushing the cooling system & using 82degree thermostat & thermoswitch, except for when i left it running after coming off a track session a few weeks ago.
