Hey

My left hand roof catch is not locking down properly.

Ive taken the handle mechanism off and think i can see the problem, just not sure if it can be fixed!! Here we go at trying to explain!

Inside there is a circle (gold in colour) piece of mental with a ramp cut in the side of it and the arm which opreates the catch runs inside this and locks in place. Mines not running in the ramp as its worn away on the arm, can this be replaced?? or is it get new/second hand one??

hope that makes sense, im sure the people who have had this problem will know

cheers Ben

I've had the same problem with mine,

I just used my mig welder to build up the metal on the worn away piece that fits in the groove, then shaped it by filing it round to fit in the groove again, it works well but it won't last for ever, I was really surprised how much more travel the handle moved and how much easier it was to shut the roof after I fixed it,

It does seem to be a common issue, depending on how old your hood is and how much it has been up and down in its time.

Sounds like i good idea, dont do any welding myself, but no a man who can! Did you take it apart to do this (obvoiusly off the car)? doesn't look like there is room to do it while the arm is in positon. How did you do it?

Wouldnt be any point in owning a soft top if it didnt get used! :P Its 18years old and its the orginal frame, so not surprised something has finally given in the roof department.

Thanks for the replies guys

It is held on by two bolts IIRC. Should be an easy removal job. Alternatively there are a few available on eBay usually.

You do need to take the handle off,

The handle itself is held on by two allen screws, be careful not to lose the nuts they screw into down inside the roof! I found it easier to take off when the roof is down stood at the rear of the car

The bar that does the work pivots around a bush thats positioned around the rear most screw hole of the two.

Take a photo or note how the spring is also attached on the bar.

The bush is smaller on one side & larger on the other, it can be removed with gentle persuasion by knocking it out, hitting it from the smaller side which allows it all to come apart,

any problems, give me a shout,

Phil

Pics, please when you do it, Ben - sounds like it may help mine - I often have to adjust the closing hooks to get it to close, then open the handle , close up the hooks again before it will close properly. More throw on mine would definitely be good.
