DrSarty 90 1 Cars Posted March 24, 2010 Baz: That is the sexiest concept ever! A Mk I (RWD) Escort with an XU10 thumping away under the bonnet. The possibility of it being 2.3L has made me visibly moist. Oh God - is it on bodies too?....... ....... (*makes noise: nnnggggchchchchaaaaoooooooo*)... ........ I voted Mi16 BTW. harryskid 193 Posted March 24, 2010 I only driven 8valvers but i,am going to find out the hard way and at the moment fitting a gti6. I know what people say about the weight but you don't know till you try it. Ps Is that better Dr S?
DrSarty 90 1 Cars Posted March 24, 2010 Super Harry. Just saved you typing what you didn't need to. You'll love the '6 and won't notice the weight. If you need a hand just shout.

Ludi 2 2 Cars Posted April 20, 2010 A 'good' Mi is alot of fun. But harder to come by these days. That's what I was planing to say.I've driven Mi only ones and it was amazing comparing with my 1.9.After that I was looking to buy Mi engine and put it into my 205.(After 1 year looking I gave it up) About the 6 engine in every fourth scrapyard you can find some engine. timb1046 1 Posted May 4, 2010 there is a big problem these days with the major lack of MI's, i looked for a good year and then also gave up, it was only when one was posted on here at a good price i decided to go for it, otherwise i'd still have an empty engine bay. Jrod 7 Posted May 4, 2010 If you accept that any Mi needs a rebuild theres plenty around really.
BusEngineer 7 Posted May 4, 2010 (edited) I bought one with a spun shell for £160 also came with Mi gearbox, all pipework, all anciliaries, 3 row loom and ECU and a 4 branch, admitedely me and Sorrentopete had to go and get it out, but after looking at a couple of supposed 80k engines i reasoned id have to rebuild anyway and took the plunge. I bought a good short motor off a guy on here to use the crank as the one in the original was bent All in = Known good rebuilt engine As far as i can tell there arent many Mi lumps for sale that you can say that about Edited May 4, 2010 by BusEngineer
boldy205 75 Posted May 9, 2010 I had as an Mi, which was rebuilt, and loved it, it went bang quite spectacularly, i looked for another but found a 6 first, which seems to tick the right boxes as said. I still have a hankering to put an Mi back in my 205, but couldnt live with this oil surge issue. I feel its more weight at the cost of (hopefullly) reliability. (if i had the time and money id have a dry sumped Mi any day of the week, just dont let my 6 engine hear that, or it will cough its guts up!!)

SurGie 54 Posted May 25, 2010 At least there's plenty of them around .
Dum-Dum 0 Posted June 1, 2010 being a long term 306 fan i gotta say id have the GTi6 lump, its more powerful too which is always a good thing
de Noir 0 Posted June 1, 2010 if you're going to rebuild everything I would suggest XU10J4RS is safer bet some Mi internals and auxilliaries aren't produced any more - ditto hard and very expensive to source also, tidier install on XU10..
DrSarty 90 1 Cars Posted July 1, 2010 also, tidier install on XU10.. Why?
welshpug 1,657 Posted July 1, 2010 I'd imagine due to the management system not using an AFM, and has a much simpler single butterfly throttle body.
Baz 421 Posted July 1, 2010 Tidier maybe in some aspects, but much more a PITA...
24seven 104 Posted July 1, 2010 After a few thousand miles in a 1.9 8v I'm glad I voted Mi16 on this. I absolutely cannot stand this 8v engine! It's not a bad example of an 8v, genuine 80k on it and other than burning a little oil from cold it's fine. Even compared to the 1.6 that was in my 205 when I bought it, this engine just feels lazy and unexciting, there's none of that urgency and willingness to rev that the mi16 has at all. Hopefully it won't be staying for long.
damien 22 1 Cars Posted July 2, 2010 after driving my 205 gti6 for 7 days i have to say i miss my 8v. dont get me wrong it is faster, better idle and smoother drive but there is something about it that just dont feel right. also in the petrol station when people ask is it a 1.6 or 1.9 its a sod trying to explain what a gti6 engine is. the gti6 lump is bloody good fun tho.... stefan 4 Posted July 4, 2010 (edited) woted for the gti6, cause a little fed up by the mi, the first time i tryed it it seemed to me that it just screamed more than it actually went, that impression only confirmed itself over the years. But by no means, wont give up on it just yet! Edited July 4, 2010 by stefan

Gotta agree a bit there Damien. I too had a 1.9 and converted to a GTi6. There is something about the 1.9 that had a lot of fun about it. The GTi6 is obviously better in every way and goes quicker, but the 1.9 had a unique charm. I miss mine sometimes too..... until I floor the GTi6 and revel in its fun. Like you said though, I too have had those petrol station conversations where chaps come up and ask about the car and look around it and ask me if its the 1.6 or 1.9 (the fact its still got the 1.9 badges on it *MIGHT* have been a give away), then I have to explain it all.
