sss_205GTI 0 Posted September 19, 2008 Hi guys, exactly what the title says.. Ive tried searching the forums for anything on this s.a.d and all i can find is that it can be unreliable and how to check if its at fault, but i dont actually know what it does
richsmells 2 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) Supplementary Air Device. It's located near the thermostat housing and is bolted to this with two bloody fiddly nuts. It lets additional air past the throttle when the car is cold and running richer. It has a bi-metallic strip inside, which is supplied with a current. As this heats up (with the engine) the strip moves and closes the valve. You can check if it's working by squeezing the inlet pipe before the sad. If the revs drop, then the valve is open. As the car warms up, squeezing the pipe will have no effect as the valve "should" be closed. Sometimes the SAD closes too early before the engine is sufficiently warm, or isn't fully open in the first place, which will cause the car to stall, often at junctions when you pop the clutch in. sss_205GTI 0 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) So if my car is running too rich i.e. idleling at 2k and then when warm at 1.5k, could the s.a.d be at fault sticking open? Its had the AFM & Throttle body replaced with genuine Peugeot parts (by previous owners last year) by a peugeot dealer, im assuming they had this problem and where told these parts were at fault, yet replacing these parts hasnt cured the fault. Arhhh in reply to your last bit - thats exactly the problem my old 86 gti had - that was an absolute bugger for stalling at junctions - now i know the probabal cause thanks:P Edited September 19, 2008 by sss_205GTI

welshpug 1,657 Posted September 19, 2008 SAD will not make the car run too rich, as all it does is bypass the throttle body, the air is still metered by the AFM Its the AFM, coolant temperature sender and throttle position switch that affects mixture at idle. Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) So if my car is running too rich i.e. idleling at 2k and then when warm at 1.5k, could the s.a.d be at fault sticking open? For future ref, running rich doesnt make a car idle high, it generally makes it run poorly at idle, usually hunting about and stinking of fuel. Your symptons suggest the sad is working as the idle changes warm to cold, I suggest your car just needs setting up properly. Not often you find someone capable of this at peugeot as these cars require skill and experience, not plugging in and a tech based monkey Its sounds to me like the throttle stop is slightly wide open or the ignition timing hasnt been properly adjusted for the ron of fuel it is running.
