Fuel Problems On 205 1.9 Gti. With Cat

Recommended Posts

Hello guys. I have some problems with my car, i don't think it is fast enough. My 306 1.4 xl with 75 hp i almost as fast as my GTI. I have changed the fuel filter, checked the air filter, checked all the little hoses that connects the intake system´, chanched the throttel sensor. I have noticed that the spark plugs are very bright and don't have the brown coler the must have so i guess it runs a littel light with on the fuel. Sometimes it can stall a little when i hit the gas

My next gues is the AFM. But how does it check that?

Cheers Henrik

I would check fuel pressure first before anything else. It sounds very much like my old car with a lazy fuel pump. A quick search of this site will tell you how much it should flow per minute

Thanks Richie. I have checked the fuel pressure today witch was at 3 kg/cm2 in idel, but i havent checked the flow. Is that nessesary when the pressure is correct?

I have just tried pulling the hose between intake manifold and the regulator while the engine was running idel. I put my finger on the hole on the manifold an then i made a vacum with my mouth on the hose to the regulator. The engine just ran as nothing happened, shoulden't the engine rpm raise as i made the vacum in the hose?

My theory is that the fuel pressure would raise and the engine then would be running more rich and the rpm would raise. Am i right?

fuel pressure should change with vaccuum, not sure how well you would notice this at idle just listening to engine, certainley a faulty regulator will cause fueling issues. Mine however idled fine and fueling was perfect at idle according to emmisions tests and idle quality. Under load however it became apparent it had issues with running lean top end which a rolling road session confirmed. A few weeks later and it started to stutter over 3.5k rpm and within an hour of this wouldnt rev above 3.5k. It was simply down to flow rate being too low.

Ok. Tomorrow i will try driving around with a pressure gauge then. The pressure must then be stabil at 3 bars under acc?

should be 2.7 at idle and 3 bars during load .

but i'd suspect the regulator is ok and it's the fuel pump that can't give the required flow at this pressure.

or your injectors may be seriously clogged up.

and not the forget - something as simple as a buggered AFM.

Thanks. The AFM is also the last thing i haven't checked yet. And i now that the AFM is a week point on the GTI, but how do i do that? I dont have a nother one i cane try with but can't i messeure the resistense or somthing? Anybody got some data about that?

About the injectors. How can i check those?

or check hoses for leaks... If it sucks in false air, it would also give a decrease in bhp..

Have you by the way, checked your cat?? It may have fallen together..

There are a lot of aspects when it doesn't run correctly..

I have checked all the hoses and replaced those that might have sucked false air. I haven't tryed pulling the cat off but i when i revs the engine up i there is comming a lot of gasses out off the exhaust. So i think it's ok. If the cat was fallen together then the spark plugs would have been more brown/black and not white right?

I have now checked the fuel pressure and it's ok. It's 2.7 at idel and 3 bar while driving. Anybody have other ideas? Can it be the AFM that just needs an adjustment?
