davey sprocket 14 Posted September 13, 2008 Wish I hadn't bothered changing the pump now (head overhaul, new cam belt& tensioner etc), having spent the last 2 hours trying to get the old gasket off the block face. I suppose it could just have welded itself on there but I suspect it had some gasket goo to seal it.....should I be using something when I refit the new pump or just the dry gasket as per the Haynes book of wisdom??? Not that I can get much further this weekend as I picked up the wrong Timing belt tensioner form GSF this morning (I need the spring loaded one, not the later rotating adjustment job)
mickie 3 Posted September 13, 2008 how have you got the gasket off ? dont bother using wet and dry to clean it up unless you flush the oil out properly, on the cylinder head, im right in thinking you've took the head off ? i'd not use anything to seal the hg but sealing a water pump, just to be safe you could put some loctite on there

The head is off...been overhauled including a skim (after some welding on pitting on the face). I've been really careful cleaning the top of the block not to get any crap in anywhere it shouldn't be. As for the water pump gasket, I think you might be right, maybe a bit of loctite gasket sealant or suchlike for a bit of peace of mind....I really don't want to be having this all apart again in a hurry...the cambelt end of the motor is a bugger to work on in situ.
