Early And Late Exhaust Systems

Recommended Posts

I need a downpipe for a 205 that I'm putting an engine into, it has a 3 piece system fitted.

problem being is that my understanding of the systems used on 205's is;

early 3 piece system, 45mm ish bore, later 2 piece systems, just over 50mm bore.

is it possible to source the later 2" downpipe without the centre box?

That's the point of it being a 2 piece system, it's only in 2 pieces rather than 3!! ;)

that said i've got a 2 piece system on my GTI6 205 but when i was reangling the downpipe during the conversion i had to redo it after not getting it quite right the first time and found i needed to rotate the downpipe slightly to stop it hitting my extended quickshift gear lever. I found that despite it being a 2 piece system the downpipe (split downpipe version in my case and it was even bigger than 50mm i'm sure) is actually a seperate section and was actually sleeved and welded onto the rest of the exhaust so i was able to grind off the weld and pull the 2 parts apart which left me with essentially a 3 piece system. i rotated the 2 parts slightly and rewelded the 2 parts together.

Now whether the 2 sleeved parts are the same size as a normal 3 piece system is another question.

I quite fancy a smaller diameter downpipe as i'm sure my current one is too big and it feels a bit flat and blowy if you know what i mean

anyway some food for thought
