Suspension Geometry

On the 306 there's 2 different suspension top mounts, one for power steering, one for non-power steering, the difference is the pas ones are more laid back, i.e. the top of the strut is closer to the windscreen. The question is, why? Will the car handle better with either of these or will it be the same with both, is it just for the feel or what?

 

My 306 doesn't have pas, but when I fitted the turbo engine I put struts on from a 306 with pas, along with the top mounts, with me doing this at the same time as the engine I can't really compare handling. Now I've bought some coilovers and I'm wondering should I fit the pas or non-pas top mounts? It will be easier to fit the non pas ones because they are already off the car, so I can build the coilovers up then just swap them over, if I should use the pas ones then I'll have to take them off the car, strip them down to get the mounts off, then build the coilovers up and fit them.

No expert here, but I imagine it is to do with the castor angles which in turn determines the self centering of the steering.

the ones closer to the windscreen will be giving more caster, which is a good thing, but does something to the self centering (reduces i think) which means its not nice to drive without pas. in theory anyway :(

The PAS steering one has more castor, which makes the steering heavier, but improves the dynamics of the car, the non-PAS mounts compromise to make the steering light for OAP's going shopping.

 

You can turn the non-PAS mounts around by swapping them from side to side and cutting off the locating pin - the extra weight won't bother anybody who isn't a 7 stone OAP and is worth doing.
