Guest Modman08 Posted September 4, 2008 Hey guys, I’m trying out some road legal slicks ready for some road rally stuff, and I’m getting a 'whine' like noise when above 30mph ish. It’s not constant, but varies with road surfaces and speed. Now previous to this, the car passed the MOT with flying colours, but then it should considering the work done - including all new brakes, drop links, rack, track rod ends, etc etc. I must admit the only thing that hasn't been done properly yet is the wheel alignment. I have tracked it by eye and it seems pretty good - but obviously it won’t be perfect. It didn't make the noise running the original Yoko tyres, but as mentioned a lot has changed since then. The noise sounds almost like a tyre is rubbing the arch, however I’ve checked as best as possible and I can't find any fouling on the inner or outer arches etc. Do slicks make any noises on normal road surfaces? This is my first experience with them so its totally new to me. Either that or is it more than likely my alignment is all to hell and the slicks are just exaggerating it? BTW Slicks sizes are 205/50/15...too wide really IMO but I had them free to try, and my mate swears by the size, so... Just looking for some ideas to try until I get a spare set of normal tyres to swap. Cheers Leigh
Baz 421 Posted September 4, 2008 It's quite normal!! they're alot noisier and sound whiny than normal road tyres.
maxirallye 2 Posted September 4, 2008 Agree with Baz, its normal!
hengti 2 Posted September 4, 2008 certainly normal. different tyres seem to make different noise (guess it depends upon the compund and tread pattern) does yours sound like a S1 Land Rover or a TieFighter? one's cooler than the other
Guest Modman08 Posted September 4, 2008 Cheers guys thats good to know!! At the moment Im using it to go about 3 miles to work each day, so I left them on to try out. I must say its rather interesting in the wet but I think the sound is what bothered me most! Leigh
Guest Modman08 Posted September 4, 2008 Sorry hengti, I missed your post... Kinda sounds like Im being followed by some type of figher jet at full thrust, lol. Strange though....if I go faster he cant keep up I did manage to go for a good spin after swapping the two front tyres, and the noise did indeed go. It was my first proper blast in a 205 as well, as its been off the road until very recently, having a new engine. All I can say is this car was built for the twisty's...I love it! Cheers for the replies Leigh
boombang 2 Posted September 4, 2008 R888s on the back the whole way to the 'ring meant much cool sounds on the way there. I think it was more Tie Bomber than Fighter mind. When there we stuck them on the front aswell, and round the circuit it made all sorts of noises. Did turn out that some of them were the tyres on the metal part of the inner wing...
