What Sort Of Steering Rack Do I Have?

Recommended Posts

chocolate_o_brian

My car is a 1988 205 GTI 1.9 model. Phase 1.5 I believe. What sort of steering rack do I have, it's a non pas model too.

I need a new rack as mine has play so looking around places like GSF and ebay to source a bargain s money is tight.

Cheers

Andy

the difference is in the pinion that leaves the rack and is bolted to the lower part of the steering column (under the car, obviously). not sure on the cut-off point, but earlier cars were splined pinion and later were square pinion. safest way of being sure would be to have a look from the wheel arch or underneath the car (can't remember if you can tell from the engine bay but worth a quick look). should be obvious which you've got as the part of the lower column that bolts over the pinion will either be cylindrical (splined) or a squared-off open-ended clamp (square)

Yours will most likely be a splined type in my experience, but your car is close to the changeover, so you'll need to check. 1989 cars I have had apart usually have splined, whilst 1990 cars have square.

I agree, I've never seen a square pinion rack on a car newer than 1990.

Service box lists the splined rack as up to chassis number ending 23420000 so that might give you an indication.

Graham.
