Easiest way to get the starter off is downwards, no need to take anything off. However, you can't get the starter out downwards on all cars. Ones with aircon or the later remote oil/water cooler make things tricky. However, on an early car with no toys it does come out, bit awkward if the back plate is on the starter but no problem. You have to take one oil pipe off and push to one side (filler pipe from memory) and it is a bit of a squeeze but done it several times.
