manrajf 0 Posted September 3, 2008 Hi im new to the forum, and thought id start posting... Basically iv got a phase 2 miami blue 205 gti 1.6 and since the day i bought it its given me problems, one thing gets fixed and another goes wrong, but its almost all done now, and am considering putting a 1.9 in there but thats another topic. anyways i changed my driveshafts on it last week, its been runnning well and evrything was going well till yesterday morning, i tried staring it and it was turning over but not actually starting, and while it was trying to start the rev needle kept jumping from 1000 rpm to 2000rpm and then 3000rpm and then dropped down again to 1000rpm and then started... now i know it needs its alternator replacing, could that be the cause? cheers manraj

If it's a rapid fire clicking, it could point to loose or corroded battery terminals not allowing sufficient current through to starter (would also give symptoms of a duff alternator) Or a partially discharged battery (poss due to the above or a duff alternator!) I'd charge the battery, check connections - clean battery terminals and lube with vaseline (to inhibit corrosion) and try again. Just a thought, you didn't have the stereo on whilst working on it, did you?

jas-E 1 Posted September 5, 2008 If it was a duff alternator, wouldn't the engine just not turn over as the battery would charge up when the car was running?
