RINRIN 1 Posted September 3, 2008 (edited) Hi Everyone, I have steady idle in the daylight and I am proud of it. but when the sun goes down I have to turn on the headlights and then the idle starts jumpin. Going down and up. I need the rev sometime for the engine not to stall. I check the alternator and the charging system. Air hoses changed 1 month ago. Any idea where can I check I have a 1.9 GTI XUJ9A 8v. Thanks Edited September 3, 2008 by RINRIN
welshpug 1,657 Posted September 3, 2008 what results did checking the alternator's charging output give?
Fox 3 Posted September 3, 2008 What does it idle at in the daytime? If its lower than 1k it may need tweeking up to allow for the extra electric loadings
Ethos 0 Posted September 3, 2008 Hi Everyone, I have steady idle in the daylight and I am proud of it. but when the sun goes down I have to turn on the headlights and then the idle starts jumpin. Any idea where can I check I have a 1.9 GTI XUJ9A 8v. Thanks I had this when I had the 8v engine in. Fine with nothing else on but if I put the lights / fan on the revs would start going up and down and end up stalling. I also changed my alternator with no luck. In the end I advanced the timing a tad which seemed to solve it....
RINRIN 1 Posted September 3, 2008 I have a battery analyser and I made tests on battery and charging systems and the test result was OK. My idle is just about 1k Ethos what does " advanced the timing a tad " means? You mean increase the idle speed
Anthony 1,003 Posted September 3, 2008 Check the idle mixture is around 1% CO and the ignition timing is advanced sufficiently - usually it's running too rich. Normally I set Jetronic 8v's up for a 850-900rpm steady idle with full electrical load (lights, fans, heated screen etc) which normally equates to around 1000rpm when you remove the electrical load. DamirGTI 342 Posted September 3, 2008 Had this also , adjusting the ignition timing and idle mixture will solve this problem Rgs ! Damir
