NHRS2 0 Posted September 2, 2008 I took my car (1991 1.6 GTI) for a MOT yesterday & it failed on emmisions 4.2% just bought the car, its only done 300 mile since last MOT in sep 06 i changed the cap, rotor arm & plugs, couldn't get leads cleaned all hoses, thottle etc. the hose from distributor to throttle body was off & the coil end of the ht lead was a bit corroded. turned the screw on afm 2 turns anticlockwise i put it back together today & it was much better to drive, no misses & steady idle & pulled well put it in for retest and the emissions level was 0.7% when i come out the mot station it was missing a bit & got gradually worse until it eventually cut out ive checked the obvious things but it starts runs rough for a couple of minutes then cuts out & wont start again until it cools down, even when its running you cant drive it. could the mot tester have adjusted something to get the emissions down. any suggestions welcome. dcc 855 Posted September 2, 2008 sounds similar to mine when it went for its mot. the test adjusted a mixture screw i think, and it idle'd horribly and ever so lumpy. it was not as fast accellerating after, although still had a pretty decent pull.
nick 3 Posted September 2, 2008 The idle screw only affects tickover, so wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to how it would run through the rev range. I would say the ignition amp is on it's way out. Nick

NHRS2 0 Posted September 6, 2008 fitted a new set of leads from peugeot and it run better but still with a miss. got another set of plugs and fitted them and it runs perfect. spark plug on no3 cylinder was faulty even though they were new & had only done 20/30 miles Neil
