Mot Advice!

Recommended Posts

Baz

I need a quick question answered as i can't remember the exact rules regarding this.

I have a bucket seat and harness fitted for driver only. The Harness is secured via the eyebolts into where the rear seat belt buckle and where the usual driver's seatbelt would usually be, therefore rendering that rear passenger seat useless.

Now what is the legislation on this, iirc it's that if a seat is present it has to have a working seatbelt, so i can remove the seat and get my Mot? (then re-fit the seat as i need it fitted for sprint class regs)

Anybody know off the top of their head?

TIA!

I got told yes by my MOT tester. I'd remove it and then put it back in afterwards

that'll be why it passed, Baz's car in its current state wont as it has the rear bench fitted without the seatbelt, 2 minutes to remove the bench and you got an MOT cert :)

Yes as already discussed above, the point I was trying to add is that even a minimal seat configuration will pass.

I got hold of my friend who tests my cars and he's just told me i'll have to remove both the seats and the belts!! I think he's wrong, but obviously him being the tester and us being friends i don't want to argue too much.

I've had a look but can't find alot, is there any VOSA guidelines or statements that say anything i can show him??

Think he's going with if there no seat there should be no seatbelt either logic which makes sense.

Yes, so if you take the seats out you shouyld be fine, as i've done this before. Now i'm sure, yet he has said i need to remove the belts too... :)

If he says you need to take the belts out along with the seats, then just do it - it's no more than 10 minutes a side.

Might just go elsewhere tbh, especially since the price went up too!

So you've got an MOT tester telling you what needs to be done for the test, and in the time that you've sat replying to this thread you could have easily removed the rear belts and seats and had that part of the MOT to-do list sorted.... and yet you're still sat here quibbling what's been said and talking of not removing the belts anyway? :)

Seriously - removing and refitting the rear belts isn't remotely difficult - 3 x 17mm bolts per side, and removing the rear washer bottle.

irc if a seat is fitted, it must have a seat belt.

If a seatbelt is fitted it must have a seat.

irc if a seat is fitted, it must have a seat belt.

Only applies to cars registered after 1st April 1987 - prior to that, there's no requirement for rear seatbelts.

If a seatbelt is fitted it must have a seat.

Some cars, e.g. 807's, have seat belts but no seats for the rear seats...

When you register a car for the mot test, it asks how many seat belts are fitted. Tester just has to put in 1/2/3 etc

Also, if it has a bucket seat; how is anyone going to get into the back seat to need a seat belt anyway?

Well I found an MOT checklist from somewhere. Not sure of it's origin but I went through the whole list before taking my 205 for it's MOT and it passed with advisories for the headlight aims being a smidgen too high. I think technically that should have been a fail but I sort of knew the tester who was sound and I said I would definately sort it so he passed it I think.

Please see the attachment for the list.

Cheers for that Tristan!

As an update, i got the Mot on this car yesterday, flew straight through, just removed the rear seats in question, didn't need to completely remove belts as i thought. Was just marked as an advisory that no rear seats and front Harness were fitted. :)

I have back seats but no seatbelts an it passes the m.o.t. as the back seat are "unusable".

Exactly as i've done in the past, i only asked the question as i'd mentionned it to him (the tester) a few days before and he'd said i'd have to remove all, not sure he was thinking straight tbh. Alot of it is down to the tester's discretion though.

That shouldnt have passed if it had rear seats fitted at time of test with no rear belts unless yours is pre 1st April 1987, If the rear seats are unaccesable it should of failed on that too.
