Cannot Select Gears....

Having a bit of trouble on another of my 205's. The car has the Mi conversion and a BE1 box.

 

Selecting gears are fine when its cold but when it has some heat in it, its hard as f*** to select gear. Usually you can only select 3rd with a bit of BFI.

 

Apart from checking it has oil and the bottom gearbox bolt is still in, is there anything else that can be checked?

 

Or does this mean terminally-ill gearbox?

Have you checked the quality of the oil?believe it or not makes a difference.

Check the L arm on the subframe is free when its hot.

Sounds like release bearing to me, mine was the same up until i had the box out a few weeks ago, the release bearing had nearly ground through the clutch cover!!

Mine was fine selecting gears when cold but any real distance and first and second got progressively harder to select until i would have to knock the car off, select first and then restart! :)

Well, there was no oil in it for a start! But that seems to have had little effect, as the problem is still there. Pretty sure its the bearing, as you can hear it struggling to do its job........hmmm graunchy goodness!

 

Bugger, gearbox off job :P

Is the clutch cable adjusted properly?

 

The release bearing probably needs doing anyway by the sounds of it but a bit more tension on the cable might last you until you have the time to sort the bearing.

This does tend to sound like when my release bearing & clutch cover were disintegrateing on my TD a few years ago. Fine to start with but gradually got harder & harder to get any gears as the car got warmer.

 

When I took it apart the release bearing had a broken lug & the clutch cover was damaged.

I'm going to second the adjust the clutch thing...

 

I had the same problem recently. Was nice a smooth when the car was just started (not at operating temp), but after it had warmed up, reverse crunched everytime and selecting gears were a major issue. Try loosening of your clutch before you start pulling stuff apart.

I had a look at this last week for Alan.

 

There's definately something very amiss as the clutch cable was on full adjustment and yet the clutch wasn't disengaging properly and the biting point was on the floor. I put a couple of large nuts as spacers onto the clutch cable to effectively extend the adjustment range, and that's sorted the problem for now so the car is driveable again, but clearly there's an underlying fault that needs to be rectified.

 

From what I can see, it's got the correct clutch cable fitted, the gearbox is firmly attached, and it's got the correct sized BE1 rod. I can only assume that there's something amiss with the clutch arm (bent or cracked?) or with the release bearing, hence needing to over-adjust the clutch cable so much to compensate.

I assume I need a 'normal' 1.9 Mi16 clutch kit for this?

 

The reason I say this, is that its a BE1 box so aren't the release bearings different (BE1 and BE3) or am I being a pleb?

yes bearings are different, for the 205 boxes, are you running the 8 valve or Mi box?

 

if you're running 8 valve BE1 you'll need the Mi16 clutch with a BE1 bearing, if its a BE1 Mi16 box you'll need the complete Mi16 clutch, as the BE1 Mi box uses the later arm :lol:

Most decent motorfactors should be able to get you one for £10-15 or so, otherwise I've got a new (or certainly as-new) BE1 release bearing that I'll swap for the BE3 one that'll come with the Mi clutch kit :lol:
