Wishbone Balljoint Boot Clips

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

I'e got a pair of new boots to go on my wishbone balljoints, but I'm struggling to get the bottom clips to go back on. They are just wound o tightly that Izm struggling to spread the clip and get it back over th boot.

Does anyone have any pointers, or has anyone used something else, like locking wire?

I remember having a right laugh getting these back on down at the motorfactors when I took

a Wishbone back after they sold it to me with a split boot!

Think we used two pair's of pliers to spread the clip over and on again after they swapped the boot over for a good one :)

i wound the big one carefully over it bit like a key ring, rather that trying to spread it. give it a bit of grease so it slides over and doesn't split the new one.

i didn't bother with the little one at the top and just used a tiny cable tie, which is still going strong :)

Just had the same prob. on a droplink boot. get as much as you can of one end around the bottom groove, then carefully push the boot up through the clip a couple mm at a time - as said a bit of grease needed and a lot of patience

Got the first one back on using 2 pliers (while constantly shatting myself that I'd pierce the new boot).

Took the 2nd one off and found it to be quite lacking in grease. What grease should I stick in there before replacing the boot?

This stuff normally comes with the gaiters when purchased, but a local motor factor / garage will have a few sachets.

Any grease you have will do TBH. Moly CV or just general purpose EP2.

Did you go anywhere special to buy the boots?

There was a guy selling them on ebay but can't find a current advert and need to get a new pair.

I don't recall his username currently but he is a member on here too, if you search you'll find him.

Sorry I never replied to you :) It was someone on here who is also the eBay seller. IIRC his name is Phonecombz, or similar. His for sale topic is on here so you shouldn't have difficulty finding it.

I got my clips on OK. First one was a struggle, but on the 2nd one I found a really nice technique that popped it on easily. I was going to post it at the time but forgot, and now I can't remember exactly what I did  It was something along the lines of - place clip on top of boot, put a screwdriver between the 2 windings of the clip, lever downwards to seperate and get the bottom of the clip hooked in, then roll the screwdriver around the clip which then spreads it and moves it down over the boot.
