A Couple Of Mi16 Running Issues

Im having a couple of problems with the mi , when im stuck in traffic and the engine temps rise the engine feels like its going to stall , it doesnt always but when it does it wont restart for about ten minutes i think this is due to heat but what could be getting to hot to cause it ?

i have already replaced the coil , plugs ,leads, ignition mod, afm, ecu temp sender, tps, ecu, but none of this made a difference and its getting very annoying . overall the car runs quite well it ldles perfectly and pulls very well except for some bad low down hesitation.

also recently the clutch has started to get heavy when driving hard but its fine when the engine is cold, it was brand new about 5000 miles ago and had a new cable a few months before.

any ideas ???????

Its possible that either the injection or fuel pump relay is getting hot & failing, only resetting when its cooled down a bit.

 

What gearbox has your car got on? Be1 (reverse next to first) or BE3 (reverse under fifth)?

 

If its a Be1 then the plastic bushes in the gearbox end quadrant could be causing the heaviness when it gets hot.

Thanks for replying , i have also swapped the relays but it make no difference ,

the starter is playing up slightly to , when it stalls it will still turn over fine for about a minute (still wont start tho) but then the starter just dies and a relay clicks when i try to crank it,

I am running a be3 box and have changed the full clutch kit a few months ago so i hope nothing has gone wrong with it .

sounds like you have a few issues.

 

is the overheating registering on the oil and water gauges? do your fans cut in at low and high speed, is your thermostat working correctly?

when it's not restarting, you say it turns over but then doesn't turn over, the clicking could either be a wiring problem from the fuseboard via the dreaded brown multiplug to the starter, or the solonoid in the starter, assuming you've not got the imobiliser on or something.

 

you can check the wiring problem by taking a wire from the battery positive with the ignition on, and touching it to the starter solonoid connecter, if it fires it's the cable, or connector, if it doesn't its probably the starter. Its a bit of a s*it to get to, but if you drop a sub amp cable or something high gauge in between the inlet manifold you can just touch it..

 

finally ignition amplifiers sometimes cause hesitiation, and misfires when hot, it might be a good idea to test for a known good one, watch out for pattern part ones as they are pants. bosch.. is a safe bet. But if

ok i have sorted the starter problem by running a wire from the multi plug to the stater , but when the temp gauge reaches the 4th bar the fan kicks in and you turn off the engine or stall it it will not restart till it cools down (usually ten mins) it smells strongly of fuel , any ideas ?????????????

even though you have replaced from the multi plug down, when it gets hot try the battery positive, as it may be a wire further up giving you trouble and this will rule out all wiring

If it still won't fire, the starter solonoid may be to blame, a good way to check this is to turn the key a few times (5-10) when it does this. it might eventually catch and turn over.

the starter is working perfectly now but the engine is getting flooded i think , what could cause this ? cheers

i have now tried another afm know to be good and another ignition module , the hesitation has now gone but it idles lumpy and still wont restart once it has got hot , the fan works fine and the temp gauge does not go above the 4th bar . its getting fuel so what would stop it getting a spark when warm ? also the clutch does not seem to want to spring back properly almost like a spring has gone or something. help needed badly cheers

If you having an overheating problem (by the sounds of things) I think the best plan of action is to make sure the engine isn't getting too hot, ie the Radiator is cooling properly, the fans start to run when things get hot, the thermostat is working properly, a dodgy thermostat can really screw things up because if it isn't working the engine WILL overheat and then when it gets too hot the ECU (not sure if the MI16 ECU's have this feature, but most do) will not let the engine run for fear of piston ceasing.

 

Id start off checking the cooling using laser temp sensor, if you can borrow one as they aren't cheap, but are easy to use and you shouldn't get burnt while testing the temperature of things.

 

That way if all the cooling it at tip top condition, you can the know that the fault is caused by a faulty part and not general overheating.

 

Anybody else think thats a good idea? Because I'm no trained mechanic!
