Oil Cooler Hose Type

Recommended Posts

Stu

Howdy all,

Im looking to get some hoses made up for my oil cooler for the Mi, our local Pirtek guy priced me up some 3/8 bore pipe, with the suitable fittings, is this big enough?

I think id struggle to get 1/2" in, but if it needs it ill do a bit more cutting..

The fittings are 1/2" BSP, but 1/2 bore pipe is about an inch externally! Im hoping Garry or Miles will be able to make some suggestions..

Yeah, i told the guy at Pirtek i needed something that could withstand 100PSI, he looked at me kinda odd, then pulled out the hose they use..

It was rated to 100 bar.. I dont think ill break that in a hurry...

I've got 1/2" steel over braided PTFE pipe on 1/2BSP fitting on mine, it's pretty beafy but up to the heat and pressure, and I've seen more than 6bar depends on the engine though, and the temps *can* go out of the spec of the bogo rubber stuff too.

I run Pirtek hoses on mine, I will check the size over the weekend.

Make sure you have a nice easy bend on the pipes, so order them a little bit longer just incase.

My hoses had a bit of a tight bend in them and they burst at the 'ring in May.

Also, if you plan to use the car on the road, consider some way of blocking the air flow off to the oil cooler. Even if you have a STAT you will find that it is always open a bit and will over cool the oil during general road use. I used to use a crunchy nut cornflakes box!
