Arb/tb Queries

Recommended Posts

Veero

I remember seeing the topic a while back about uprating TBs and ARBs in the beam to improve handling on the 205. I remember it being mentioned about cutting/modding ARBs from other pugs down to fit the 205 beam.

Also I remember someone saying about fitting ZX trailing arms to a 205 beam to get the camber and no toe in.

My questions are thus:

Can you swap an ARB from say a 306 HDI axle into a 205 axle without modification and if you could would it have any merits? My logic for this is if you can fit ZX arms then the end plates for the ARB have the same diameter on the part that pushes into the trailing arm on the ZX and 205, the components for which all look fairly similar anyway (without getting the verniers out...).

Reason for this is I have 2 torsion bars and an ARB from a 306 HDi axle in my garage and wondering if it's worth fitting (if they do fit).

Thanks

Veero

The 306 bars are wider, too wide for a 205 beam.

ARB is too long to fit in a 205 axle, and needs to be shorterned and resplined to suit.

306 HDi I think would have a 22mm ARB in it, which is a nice upgrade for road going 205's

Torsion bars are of no use though really.

Cheers Anthony, cleared that one up nicely.

Do you know if the chappy is still doing the cutting and resplining service?

Edit: Lightning fast as ever guys, nice one!

ARB if it was from a HDi DTurbo model will be 24mm, same as the gti6.

Yeah just measured it and it's 24mm, won't that be a bit too stiff for a road going 205? I will be track daying it but only every now and again.

its not too stiff.. 106 gtis and the citreon saxo VTS(???) have 24mm rear ARB's as standard.

series 1 106 rallye's have a 22mm rear ARB just for info.

ive been doing a little research into this but you could get a 106 rear ARB to fit the 205 beam with a little bit of work.. its the same length roughly, you just need to mill out the inside of the trailing arm shafts to accept the larger diameter ARB end plates.

Yeah, Paul (205turbo) at 205Parts is still doing them, although he can be a little difficult to get hold of at times

As said, a 24mm ARB is OK for road use as well, although depending on personal preference you might prefer it with a 309 front ARB. Even if you don't like it, I'm sure you'll find it easy enough to swap for a milder 22mm item :)

Where would I find a 22mm one? Any ideas on the cost of Paul modding my 306 one? I tried emailing but it bounced straight back.

ZX Volcanes have them, as do some of the "warm" hatch 306 and Xsara's.

I'm pretty sure that I've got a spare 22mm ARB that I'd swap for your 24 if you wanted to do it that way?

As for price, I'm not sure off the top of my head - it's a fair bit cheaper modifying a ZX/306/Xsara ARB than buying one made from new. Have a look in the group buy thread as it will probably say somewhere in there, otherwise I'll find out from Paul this weekend as I'll likely be seeing him.

Ah ok, I'm quite keen to try this 24mm one though. If you could ask Paul that would be good but I don't want to be waiting months and months for it like I saw in the group buy thread. I would think it would be cheaper supplying my own too.

yes go for the 24mm bar. its savage on the road,,cant wait to get her on a track. i just shortened the 306 bar by the required amount on one side(bout 3inches) with the angle grinder; put on the endplate and gave her a few shots of the welder.

Alot cheaper than getting it machined down and resplined and generally you only take off one endplate when removing arb so its all the 1 imo.

Hehe sounds like a fairly simple solution to the problem I guess
