Oil Pump Chain And Big End Replacement

Recommended Posts

Rock Lobster

hey everyone, i'm in neeed of some some help with my partial engine rebuild, after stripping down the big ends i've found them all to be slightly scored which after 100k miles i fully expected to be honest, would it be wise to go the whole way, strip out the crank and replace the mains? i want a quick turn around rebulding this, as i already had a set back today after finding peugeot had ordered me the 1600 shells and not the 1900 ones!! annoying.

My other problem is with the oil pump chain. I have done a search and read the chain is normally quite loose but when my pump came out it just didn't seem right for it to be that slack? And i've heard that there are two different lengths of chain too just to confuse the issue! I have counted 52 on this one but could it be possible that the wrong one has been fitted? Also there was no L shaped spacer. Would it be worth replacing the chain anyway? and how the hell do you fit the split pin type!!?

The engine is a temporary replacement out of my 309 goodwood (1992) if this helps.

Any help at all on this will be hugely appreciated

cheers

Huw.

...but that is at Germany. I don't know the price level in UK, but that seems like somewhat a price that kind of part should cost. Tell us how much they ripped you with it, ok?

Chain on my 1.6 appeared unbelievably slack, but was advised this was to allow for expansion when everything heats up. I checked the chain thoroughly & was satisfied it wasn't worn, so concluded advice was correct. Had no problems since ... well, not with the chain, anyway!

52 links? Are you sure? I'm fairly certain that's an XU10* chain to suit the larger 26T crank sprocket.

This is what i thought, it does seem stupidly slack! I'm workin on it tomorrow so i'll double check the links again and let you know. I've stripped one of my other engines and it was a struggle to get the pump off, thats how i thought it should be!

Cheers for the replys guys, very much appreciated!

Did you have any success sourcing an L shaped spacer and are they available in different thicknesses?

My car has one (marked A1) but there is still 20-25mm of play in the chain. Would like it a little tighter.

Just been down to the garage to check the number of links on the chain and now counted 50 links, i also managed to come across a spacer marked with a C? what this means i couln't tell you! i've taken a pic of the slack in the chain and will put it up when i'm back at the house, it shows a silver link in there that could mean its a slit link type perhaps and its been changed before?

That sounds about right. The chain is normally very loose, but as long as there isn't enough slack that it can actually jump off the sprocket then it will be fine.

this is the photo i took of the chain. I'm still sure its not right, this is with the spacer!

That's very similar to mine, perhaps a little slacker.

Just spoke to Peugeot and there are two thicknesses of spacer available; 0.7mm and 1.1mm. They are only £1.27 +VAT so I'm going to stick the thicker one in just for piece of mind.

thats not a bad idea, may aswell go and pick one up too and see what happens. would might even made one up out of some scrap plate i've got knocking round, maybe 2-3mm and double check it clears the sump, can't see it being a problem though. don't fancy putting a new chain on really, too much hastle.

had a look again out of curiosity at the pump/chain etc, even with the spacer in you can turn the pump sprocket and it jumps sprockets on the drive sprocket. not good! makes me wonder how the engine ran at all! the only other possibility that i can think of is that either of the sprockets come in different sizes and i have mistakenly put a different pump on from my earlier 205?

anyone know if this is possible?
