1.0 Carb Adjusting For Idiots

Hi all,

 

Ive got a base model 1.0 while the GTIs in bits, the problem I'm having is the carb needs adjusting I think.

 

When its cold it judders/splutters an tries to cut out, but its always running a fast idle even when cold, so when I pull the choke out a bit it makes a right racket.

 

Im at a junction engines revving like mad I go to set off and it stalls ( and yes I can drive )

 

Ive found a offset slot screw to the front/bottom/right (if that makes sense) which has a spring on, Ive turned this in an out which has made it abit better but seams like its lost power. (I now it didn't have much to start with)

 

Is there any way for a complete novice to set the carb up ie, turn one screw all the way in then three turns out etc, is there anymore screws or an other trick, or is it knackered.

Not really without at least a CO meter, you want to set the idle speed and the amount of CO in the exhaust to be within limits (Usually about 1.5% and 950rpm).

 

Revving like mad could be an air leak, this would explain the lack of power too. Also check the ignition timing if you can.

I tweaked the mixture on my XS by working out which way the screw went (loosening it made it richer IIRC) and then leaning it off until it ran roughly, then a turn back in the rich direction to settle it. The screw has remarkably little effect - think it took about 5 or 6 full turns to make a discernible difference. The carb's different on yours but the principle's the same. Bit rough and ready but should work if its just mixture.

 

However, I'd echo above suspecting an airleak - the rubbery host from the airbox to the vent pipe is a frequent culprit.
