davemar 16 Posted August 26, 2008 I'm getting a knocking sound while pulling away or while cornering tightly, which I assume is one of the driveshafts. The problem is, I'm struggling to work out which side the sound is coming from (I do have two ears!). Is there a good away of trying to determine which driveshaft and joint is wearing out without driving the car? I've also got a couple of old driveshafts in my garage, but I don't know what state they are in (CV boots are fine), so I would also like to be able to check those without taking them apart or fitting them to the car. It's a 205 1.1 carb TU.
Anthony 1,003 Posted August 26, 2008 Usually, if it's when turning right it's the left (passenger) driveshaft, and if it knocks turning left, it's the right (drivers) driveshaft
davemar 16 Posted August 28, 2008 It sounds like the right-hand one, certainly now I listen carefully it is more from that side. It would be still handy to know whether a driveshaft off the car can be checked, as I do have a RH one lying around of unknown condition.
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 28, 2008 check for slop and graunchiness in the joint, condition of the cv boot etc, any binding. a good CV will be fairly stiff in all directions but should not bind.
