Engine Bay Strip-out And Rebuild

Recommended Posts

nick9one1

I started stripping the engine bay down today, Ive got quite far!

just a few questions,

1. I'd really like to shotblast and respray all the cast iron components, anyone know of a good paint thats heat proof?

2. Do you think its worth pulling the whole engine out now ive got this far to shotblast and respray the engine bay, (it has a few rust spots)

3. Are there any other parts im worth replacing now its this far dismantled? I've already decided I'm replacing all the rubber hoses with silicone ones, most of the gaskets (is cylinder head worth it) bolts and connectors to sensors etc.

4. Where can i get the black hose-type stuff that bundles the wiring loom together?

I'm using hycote high temperature paint(aluminium) for painting bits like this at the minute and it seems quite good..Bought a small tin of "tetrosyl aluminium heatproof paint" and "granville cylinder black" to mix up in a spray gun to do the engine/gearbox but have'nt done this yet.

Yeah, i'd do it..might aswell treat it now. If you don't want to go to a bodyshop, you can paint it with aerosol tins in there because you won't see it.

When's the timing belt/water pump last been done? Think along those lines..clean up the throttle body, afm etc really well too in my opinion.

The scrapyard! For next to nothing mate.

They dont sell junk so you cant miss (paints etc...), Think they do split loom too

If a jobs worth doing...... rip it all out dude  If you do all the prep yourself it wont cost much at all to get a shop to spray it.

New brake fluid reservoir, washer bottle and coolant header tank will make a massive difference to the appearance of the bay, if you are cleaning up everything.

I've got a fair bit of brand new cable sleeving in different sizes, which I won't be using now. Feel free to get in touch if you want to buy it from me. Or just buy it directly from Vehicle Wiring Products like I did.

Deffo worth removing the engine/box to de-grease properly etc.

I would recommend doing the head gasket too, when you have got the head off you might aswell change valve stem oil seals and grind the valves in.

Also get a full engine gasket kit, while engine is out you might aswell change sump gasket and crank seals etc.

If you really want to the job properly get the subframe off and suspension and get it shot blasted and powder coated
