kate205gti 4 Posted August 25, 2008 ignore this, i locked it up anyway but the bottom crank pulley is way out of line so thats come off - guessing i need a new one? ive found this guide but could do with even more of an idiots guide - is there one around for a 6 engine please? kate205gti 4 Posted August 25, 2008 ahh thats brilliant - cheers stuart can we have something like that on here for FAQ? how and where do you lock the flywheel though? i think i need to replace my tensioners (were S16 ones) and cambelt for later 137 tooth ones, the bottom crank pulley doesnt line up although that cambelt timing guide says not to use the timing hole on this someone also suggested using an 8v pulley? any definative answer on this please? stuart.m 0 Posted August 25, 2008 Flywheel - there is a small hole in the block through which you can put an allen key or something, which goes into a recess in the flywheel and locks it. On that 306 site theres a guide called 'Cambelt DIY change FAQ' - theres a picture of this in there, albeit they are using a chuck key and not an allen key, whatever works. It is possible to set the timing without the pulley on, by aligning the keyway in the end of the crank with a bolt, theres a picture on that site, easiest way to explain it! BUT - the best method is definetely get a new one, so you know in future it is right. I dont know about the 8v pulleys, although I know there is people sell lighter alloy pulleys for the 6 engine i think? Not sure who though. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 25, 2008 The flywheel locking is only onTU car's not XU, It's common place for them to slip, some have marking arrow's on them other's don;t, Mind if they do slip it will at somepoint break up and fall off, tell tell sign is alt squel as the belt goes slack. Alastairh 47 Posted August 25, 2008 If your alternator doesn't squeek because of this, just chuck the old one on. Time the engine up with the 8v pulley as i said earlier, chuck the 6 one on to use, and job done. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
