Ew Or Xu

I'm currently assembling a Peugeot 206 for stage rallying and want to get a bit more power, should I pursue the EW engine route or go Mi16 etc???

I had a good Mi16 built by Rob at Shenpar years ago but as he's left I am not sure where to go for a decent motor, I'm looking at headwork, cams, throttle bodies etc but I am not managing to find much info regarding the EW engine.

Can anyone give a returning Pug lover some advice?????

I would go the EW way, it's basically refined XU.

depends if you are building it to 1600 or 2000cc regs. the latter will be TU, XU engines don't go easily into the 206.

It'll be staying 2 ltr.

I'm looking to go forged internals etc but just wanted to make sure the EW was worth using as a base.

Where would I go for a 'proper' head, seen examples of a few specialists and would like some input from those more informed???

There are two 206 Gti's that run in the LMA Euro saloons (who as I understand were running in one of the 750MC classes).

I believe them to be the sort of spec you are talking about and 250bhp approx. Definately very quick (and expensive!) and believe they were Richard Longman engines.

EW again really, A later more refined engine with a better design head, well for torque at least, Plus it fit's without having to mod any engine mount's which isn;t hard but easier for spares etc

Now as the topic is opened... Anyone have any pics of the EW's internals? I'm interrested about the contruction of the cylinders, AFAIK they are dry sleeves?

This would be nice to know, maybe for the future :)

I have seen a few EW10's internal before, iirc the crankshaft is definitely much lighter than any XU crank and the webs are also smaller. the conrod also lighter too. the inlet valve seems a little smaller than XU9j4's.

Afaik the cylinders are cast iron sleeves that's cast directly into the aluminium, well I guess in reality the aluminium block are cast around the sleeves though :)

I've not first hand experience, but people generally say these blocks don't handle boost as good as the XU.

my friends are racing the 307 with EW10 engine for quite a few years already, EW also suffered the oil salvation problem but not as bad as the XU9(Mi). their home made partitions and trap doors look more like maze than anything you can think of. the partition/trapdoors from pts didn't work well for that level of circuit race neither.

they built my XU9 with JENVEY 45mm, SCHRICK, JE Piston 85mm, SAENZ forged connecting rods, ARP bolts and 85.5mm liners a few years back. after they started racing 307, they recommended me the next motor should not be any XU anymore due to a much better design of the EW block (although it is still no comparison to Honda's B-series)
