Alternator Problems

Recommended Posts

Dj_mini

On my track car im on my 4th alternator in 12months has any one had problems like this im wondering if the extra revs (8K) are damaging them due to over spinning?

I did have the control circuit working with an led but iv since changed this to a normal lamp to see if the resister was damaging them but have not been out since then.

Any advice much appreciatated

Are they standard alternators that you're using?

What's actually breaking in the alternator?

Heats a fantastic killer of alternators, starter motors but to name a few. You sure its not the heat thats doing it? If its a track day car, things are gonna get VERY hot in there.

If the high RPM are killing it, try changing the pulley wheel (larger wheel on alternator) on it to slow it down. Don't know how you would do this like?

Or see if you can find a high rpm alternator!

Miles

Are they new or S/H ones?,

On my old engine I just used a std 16v one and never had a problem and that saw 8500 most of the time, Maybe I was lucky

Iv had a recon one that the motor factors changed twice but since have had s/h ones but all seems fine then just stop charging so i think it must be the control circuit thats failing?

Theres not a great deal of heat as the exhaust is at the rear and the alternator is at the front with good air flow over it so would expect it to be well cooled.

There seems to be other people like miles using them at revs with no problem so there must be somthing im missing?
