Best Place To Locate A Carb Fuel Pump

Recommended Posts

M_R_205

Im running R1 carbs on my 1.9 gti and suffer from heavy fuel starvation when gunning it, i replaced the old (Very old!!) silver top pump with a solid state pump and it hasn`t made a difference,

When fitting the solid state it says in the instructions to mount as close as possible to the fuel tank and as low as possible,

Now im guessing that the pump is struggling to pull the fuel from the tank all the way along the fuel line to the pump, which is mounted in place of the jack, Do you think im correct or barking up the wrong tree?

If im right the only place i can fit the pump with enough space is under the drivers seat, :D:angry:

Where has everyone else mounted the pump? iv seen several in the engine bay like mine and seem to work ok?? Could it also be that im drawing fuel through the standard pump be causing a restriction?

All help appreciated

Paul

Forgot to mention iv set the fuel pressure at 4 psi (roughly) and the reg is mounted just off the slam pannel.

Could use a standard 205 GTi intank pump, and then use regulators to knock the pressure down to something suitable?

It's prehaps not the most elegant way of doing it, but it works and doesn't suffer starvation at all in my experience.

My fuel pump is underneath the car, just by the fuel tank with a guard to project it from the exhaust, its been fine for the past 5 years and I've never suffered fuel surge. Its worth checking where the fuel pick up point is in the tank though as I know that has been the cause of surge in some conversions.

so you have mounted the pump in the exhaust tunel, when i was looking for somewhere to fit i thought about that as there was space but decided not to due to the heat, i never thought bout a heat sheil though, good plan il have another look!!

Thats been in the back of my mind as a last ditch attempt,

first I need to get a fuel pick up made to fit in place of the std pump to see if the pump is restricting the flow of fuel

I think he means he mounted it infront of the tank, there's space infront of the beam I think. I mounted mine here too after having problems but I found that it was actually the regulator that was upsetting things. The fuel pressure was adjusted too low and when the reg got hot (mounted in the bay) the spring would soften a bit and I would lose all fuel pressure. Simple fix was to up the pressure from 3 to 5 psi and it seemed to sort it out.

Anyway, yes.. mount the pump low down and near the tank. They do a lot better pumping fuel than they do sucking it.
