Swapping Girling Rear Drums For Bendix Rear Drums

Recommended Posts

Ok, I currently have Girling rear brake drums and shoes. But I cant get these brake shoes here. Only Bendix brake shoes. I've found Bendix brake drums on a 309 at a local french car scrapper, and I want to replace my drums with these Bendix ones. Do I have to hammer out the stub axles? Or can I just undo some bolts from the back plate and remove the backplate?

Or can i get away with just swapping the shoes, all the springs and the wheel cylinders? Do I have to swap the backplates? The brakeplates in Servicebox look so similar, with only differences shown in springs and shoes, while the setups shown in the Haynes look very different, implying the entire assembly would need to be swapped.

just whip the drum off - single 30/32mm nut, then remove the backplate - 4 Torx bolts.

IIRC the backplates have a different shape hole for the wheel cylinder, one is oval and the other round.

few differences being that the non-gti 205 rear drums are 10mm shallower, with narrower shoes to suit, though the 309 uses both size drums on various models so as long as all the parts match it'll work just fine :)

Thanks welshpug. I'll see how it goes in an hour or so.

Ok, I removed the shoes, brakeplates, wheel cylinders, springs etc. only to realize that the Bendix shoes appear to be the narrower kind (130mm) and one of the wheel cylinders is the wrong one. Yes, the owner had two different wheel cylinders installed.

The brakeplates are pretty much the same. I havent checked the shape of the hole on all two plates but one of themso far has an oval shape. But at least I now have the springs and retaining clips etc for the Bendix shoes (which my local dealer does have in stock). Tomorrow I'll check and see if they have two matching Bendix wheel cylinders.

In case they don't, does anyone know of any other Peugeot wheel cylinders which might work in the same location as the Bendix wheel cylinders?

Cheers.
