Guest choppa7 Posted August 20, 2008 Car is a 1989 205 GR just to get that out the way. Jacked the car up a few days ago on the passegner side to have a gander underneath (just brought it home). When it was in the air there was something leaking from what looked like the brake pipe, I stuck a jam jar under said leak and caught some liquid which was a dark brown colour. I looked under the bonnet and deduced that it must be the brake pipe as the fluid is dark brown and it we coming from where a brake pipe clip was under the car, about a foot back from the gear stick underneath on the passenger side, connected to the pass rear wheel. I Dropped the car back down level and the leak stopped which I did think was a bit strange but hey ho, it was definately leaking when it was up. I've just removed said brake pipe to get a replacement made up and this is where the mystery starts.... I removed the pipe, collected the brake fluid which drained out of the pipes in bottles either end, and inspected the pipe. The pipe seemed fine so I had a look under the car and there was still a drip coming from the brake line clip WTF??? I stuck some kitchen roll round the clip to dry it thinking it was excess fluid but sure enough it continued to leak. When I compared the fluids, the brake fluid was clear and dark brown (clean) but this other leak was a slightly different shade and murky (dirty). Could it be that theres water or something been collected in the car and is finding its way out when the car is jacked up? Is there any fluid lines which run the length of the car inside which could be leaking and dripping when on an angle? SHould I just bleed the system and ignore said lek as the brakes were fine before???? Sorry for the long read but any helps great! Thanks
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted August 20, 2008 i'de lift your carpet as it sounds like theres a small lake in there!!the brake pipe clips poke into the underside of the carpet soundproofing. you'll have water leaking in and collecting in the footwells. Unfortunately there only about 20 places it could be coming from! Best to lift the carpets and keep them out until you are confident that the leaks are fixed. otherwise you will be carrying a lot of extra weight and rotting your shell from the inside out (if its not rotten already) . the sill drains can also block and can fill them with water , but there's no pipe clips near there and you can usually hear the water sloshing when you stop at junctions AL
CosKev 16 Posted August 20, 2008 Think you have answered your own question m8 Pull the clip out and see what happens. You should be able to tell the difference between the consistancy of brake fluid and dirty water Brake fliud will be the oily one!!!!

MiamiGus 0 Posted August 26, 2008 Might be a daft one but when my heater matrix went it leaked and filled up the footwells then drained out when the car was tilted through one of the underbody metal bungs. Might help you mate?
mickie 3 Posted August 27, 2008 rear footwell ? theres a hole in the footwell around there, could be coming from that, dunno, have a look under the carpet.. only pipes under the car are fuel and brake pipes, if ya have a sunroof, the pipes for them run away out of the inner wings and back inner wing
