Rewiring A 1.6gti...

Recommended Posts

ashley peddle

Had anthony over lastnight to try and source the non-starting issue, but after re-timing the cambelt, checking the injectors, rewiring the coil and a whole host of other bits we have kind of come to the colclusion that the wiring loom was fried when I tried to start it with the coil wired up incorrectly :)

I have a new loom, but was wondering if there is a guide anywhere for how to do it? I am quite happy to cut the old loom out to save removing the dash, but im not so hot on what comes next?

done a quick search and couldnt find anything...

cheers

Surely you'll just have to replace the engine/sensor loom?

Which'll just be connected to the two brown multiplugs/ecu the inside the car... if you already have a 1.6 loom this should be very quick/easy :)

Shouldn't need to cut it.

When you take the old loom off the engine, feed it all back through the bulkhead hole and unhook the ECU etc, you'll have to partially remove the dash, or cut the loom to get the ecu connector through, but it'll all become clear once you start doing it, refitting the loom is reverse of removing obviously, depending on where you want to route the ecu connector. :)

or cut the loom to get the ecu connector through,

You don't need to cut the loom at all - feed it from the engine side into the car. Take your time and feed the smaller (diameter and plug size) sections through first then you'll have enough space for the larger connectors too.

As mentioned removing the lower dash (the section with the tray above the pedals) will give you more space.

James.

You do if you don't want to take half the dash apart. I'm referring to the ecu connector being made free to be removed completely, not feeding it through the bulkhead.

It's really not too much hassle to remove the whole dash - and will make the whole job so much easier overall

Yeah, but its not required and the old loom is shagged, why not?

As i said on FSC peddle. Done a fair few now :)

Ashley's loom is no good, dead, kaputt!!

Ali and I know this as we've fiddled with the car, probably not very clear without pointing that out, so it is not worth fiddling around with the dash etc to get the loom out complete when it will probably never work again, and is going to be chopped up to make a conversion loom or something anyway, hence both mine and Alastair's comments.

I get that the old loom is dead, but you still have to fit the new one. IMO it's easier to fit with the dash out the way - assuming it's a straight rewire 1.6 for 1.6 and the ecu is going back in it's original position. I've done a couple now, and would always remove the dash IIRC - to route the loom properly requires removing not only the ecu but the mounting plate, too and this won't come out with the dash in situ.

Spot the wiring location - and only about 40 mins to re assemble from here

Thats the correct way to do it but its perfectly reasonable IMO to just leave the dash alone and route the loom differently.
