Disabling Power Steering On A 6

Recommended Posts

Bakes100

Hi Guys

Got a bit of a strange question here, is it possible to "disable" the power steering?

As im thinking of scrapping it all together on my 6 lump but wanted to see how heavy it was first, as its my daily driver.

Do any of you other 6 boys find the steering uncomfortably heavy without PAS??

Thanks

make sure the battery is good, take the Auxillary belt off and give it a drive round the block, do a 3 point turn, and a few roundabouts if they're not too far.

That will be dangerously heavy as you will be fighting against the hydraulic fluid. The only way to drive it without PAS is to literally remove the ram from the rack.

i had to experience this (in a 205) because of a malfunctioning alternator which had to be disconnected.

it works, but it's very uncomfortable (actually it's hard work) and i cannot see any reason why anybody would want it.

simply disabling the PAS will not convert the steering system into a PAS-free one. although i cannot say where the difference is in detail.

Ive driven a 205 with a Pas ram disconnected and drained etc. Didnt notice it being any heavier than a non Pas rack tbh. You will need to disconnect the ram though as already mentioned.

more noticable at lower speeds. after driving a non pas 205 and a pas'd 205, i much prefer the feel of the non pas. personal opinion though!

As said you'll need to disocnnet the pump and the ram on the back of the Rack itself, it's a bit heavy till about 5+mph then it's as light as a normal non Pas rack, just gives you 3turns lock to lock not the usual 3.8 so makes for a much better feel.

I'm considering re fitting PAS in mine, but that's down to the fact I'm putting in an even more agressive plate diff shortly the current 40% diff 45/45 ramps is fine on the non-PAS set up (despite what the net may say)

I did the no ram on a pas rack thing and hated it, too much play in the rack.
