applemobile 0 Posted August 19, 2008 This is going to sound a very stupid question that im sure someone will pick a flaw with. Could bike carb's be modified to run without teh carbs. So only teh butterflys are used, and still keep standard injectors in. Sounds stupid i guess, but would this be a viable cheap solution to Tb's??
welshpug 1,661 Posted August 19, 2008 yes, seen it done with a standard gti6 manifold.
applemobile 0 Posted August 19, 2008 really? wow, i was expecting to get ripped for my stupid cheapskate idea! i was looking at doing it with a s16 manifold. Looks pretty simple to do. Guess its a case of finding teh carbs with teh closest offset.
welshpug 1,661 Posted August 19, 2008 S16 manifold wouldn't be the best to use, either the alloy Mi16 or a gti6 manifold would be ideal, keep the runners as long as possible. both manifolds curve quite nicely down away from the bonnet which is the main problem with off the shelf throttle bodies which means you can't get a decent tract length. welshpug 1,661 Posted August 19, 2008 here you go; on Damien's old 306, I think he may still have them for sale!
applemobile 0 Posted August 19, 2008 ahhh ok makes sence. So what about all that AFM and things, i take it that can all be thrown out the window? sorry i dont know much about these engines yet!
welshpug 1,661 Posted August 19, 2008 doh, forgot to ask, which engine is this for? you'll need aftermarket management to run throttle bodies, Megasquirt, DTA, Emerald ETC, and a mapper to set it up for you. being in Devon you're not too far from sandy (I think...) I believe he preffers DTA.
DjB 0 Posted August 20, 2008 Maybe a better option for cheaper TBs could be 4AGE 20 valve TBs. If you keep an eye on EBay they can be had quite cheaply. I got a set quite cheaply and in really good nick too ($230aus). Chris
Batfink 201 Posted August 20, 2008 The best option would be a proper inlet manifold as too many homebrew setups dont make much power. Speak to Colin Satchell or Sandy as they are developing some good bike tb conversion kits at the minute.
DrSarty 90 1 Cars Posted August 20, 2008 (edited) The best option would be a proper inlet manifold as too many homebrew setups dont make much power.Speak to Colin Satchell or Sandy as they are developing some good bike tb conversion kits at the minute. I totally agree with the above; this team can be totally trusted. There are other options, such as Bogg Bros, who will make a custom manifold (as Colin can do) to join most heads to most carb/TB set ups, OR - as I'm doing - rise to the challenge of doing it yourself. But as Kev says, there are plenty of other considerations. For example you mentioned an air flow meter (AFM), and there's only one of those 8v and Mi16 engines; none on a GTi6. But you will need after market management regardless, despite the apparent simplicity of the set-up. My engine is currently getting Yamaha R1 throttle bodies. The bodies were £100 AND still needed modifiying to fit better injectors. Their spacing means a lot of brain ache and manipulation of metal tubes and flanges to make things fit, eg bonnet clearance from bits and bobs attached to the ITBs and to try and keep optimum, even inlet runners. The Emerald ECU was around £700 and then there will be other costs like air sock/box and possible other mods like throttle cable fittings. In summary, it's not easy.......but that's the fun . P.S. My GTi6 inlet tract is for sale at £55 if you want it? Edited August 20, 2008 by DrSarty
damien 22 1 Cars Posted August 20, 2008 here you go; on Damien's old 306, I think he may still have them for sale! still got them but they are no longer for sale. was running kms management, the engine made good power but it was running cams, decat, head work etc so that helped alot

applemobile 0 Posted August 20, 2008 thanx for all the help. I have so many questions to ask. but will get round to that in the future. I have decided to go a little more ''balls deep'' in my conversion. Just a bit of fun. Im not after huge power, but i enjoy making stuff, and modifying things. So even if it barely reaches more than stock power, i will be happy that it runs. Also i thing that TB's sticking out of the bonnet would look rather menacing
