Coppper Brake Line From Under Beam To Rear Hub

Recommended Posts

mainline

Hi, as some of you might know, I have been having trouble with my nipples  . Specifically I have removed the beam from my 1991 1.6 GTI and replaced it with a beam from a 1987 1.6 GTi. I was having great difficulty bleeding the LH rear brakes because I could not get the nipple to move. I tried everything the other day, 8mm socket (rounded it) 7 mm socket (wouldn't go over the nipple - even with a hammer), hacksaw, everything. Then I had a good idea and removed the slave cylinder from my old 1991 beam and put it on the 1987 hub which allows me to use an 8mm spanner to undo the nipple.

Excellent!

Only problem was that I snapped one of the copper lines trying to remove a stubborn male connector when removing the brake line under the knackered nipple.

No bad thing as the lines were looking a little worse for wear so I ordered a new set from Pug. I ordered using my reg plate for the 1991 year. Picked up the shiny new lines today.

Tried to fit the copper line tonight and one of the male connectors is too big and won't screw in  . The ones I took off are both the same size and these are different. I am presuming the bigger one is one that fits under the beam since both slave cylinders are identical. Does anyone know a part number or some information about when (if) the connectors changed size? Or could it be that the lines are side specific and I need to order a particular one for the LH? Don't think that's the case as the guy at Pug said they were the same.

Many thanks

Ian

iirc, ther are two types of drum brakes on the 205s. each brake cylinder type are different. one uses m10x1 and the other m12x1

do you know if the brake cylinders are handed? or the same both side?

can i ask how much you paid for your brakelines?, as i'm pretty sure you could of had some made up a lot cheaper

Hi, thanks for the response, much appreciated.

You're right about the brakes, there are two types, Bendix and Girling. They must have given me the wrong male connector then for whichever one has an m12x1 to the cylinder, which is why the other end with the M10x1 fitted in fine. Both of my hubs had the same brakes so that would make sense. Can't remember which one, but they were both the same.

Not sure if the cylinders are handed. I just removed the same side from my old beam. I will check tomorrow for you Jord. My gut feeling is that they were identical - obviously that might be specific for Bendix or Girling too.

I paid £6 each for the lines inc connectors so £12 odd. I probably could have saved a fiver, but just wanted to get the bits quickly.

Rear drum brakes on all of the 1.6 beams I've seen have been Girling rear brake iirc but even if they were bendix rears they should still have the M10 union.

The wheel cylinders with M12 unions have built in compensators where the 1.6 has a simgle line to the rear brakes with an inline compensator valve at the back of the engine bay behind the battery on the engine bay side of the inner wing.

Graham.
