nick9one1 2 Posted August 17, 2008 Ive got most of the way through removing the camshaft but the last bit I'm struggling with, Ive managed to remove the cover and all the brackets that hold the camshaft in place, the distributor (although im not sure this is necessary) and the top cambelt cover. I think all i have left to do is unbolt the pully/belt from the shaft, but im unsure how to lock the belt in place? I heard something about sticking a bar in the flywheel? if this is correct where can i find the flywheel? Cheers, Nick
boombang 2 Posted August 17, 2008 Think you've done it all a bit backwards. Got a Haynes manual there? You need to get off the stat housing as I remember, plus the cambelt. That locks under by the crank pulley with two 10mm bolts, then another one will lock the cam in place when you come to time it all back up. It's not a good idea to undo all the cam cap covers like that whilst leaving the ends on, and when re-tightening do each bit by bit in sequence to avoid snapping any of them off. Forces on those bolts can be massive.
mickie 3 Posted August 17, 2008 put all the caps back on, take the timing belt off, mark it up first then take thew caps back off, im pretty sure you dont need the water housing off, just pull the camshaft up and it should pull out
nick9one1 2 Posted August 17, 2008 great thanks I've managed it now! i dint need to take the distributor off. but the bolt on the pully was tight!
nick9one1 2 Posted August 19, 2008 well after putting the standard cam back in it idles much more smoothly but Ive discovered that by removing the dizzy i now need to adjust the timing! my next buys are a timing light and Haynes manual lol
jackherer 543 Posted August 19, 2008 Don't bother with a timing light, the book advance figures you'd be setting it to are for 80's four star so are irrelevant with todays fuels. Fill it up with the fuel you intend to use, super unleaded preferably but only if you plan on sticking with it permanently. Then set the dizzy to about mid way and take it for a drive up an incline in a high gear at low revs, open the throttle and listen for pinking, if you don't hear any stop and advance the timing a little and try again, repeat this until you hear pinking and then retard it a bit and you will be in the sweet spot. nick9one1 2 Posted August 20, 2008 thanks jackherer. just had a go centering the dizzy this morning before work. Runs at a much lower rpm! just just need to find some hills!
