boombang 2 Posted August 17, 2008 I've got a rear screen I need to go out to paint the tailgate then fit polycarb window in, but it's a massive pain to remove. Took the screen out of one previously but the tailgate was full of rust so got binned - only reason it came out easily was the rusted away metal. Any tips on getting it out? Have run a knife down all the sides so they are loose, but can't get a blade in the corners, and would rather not break the glass. Surely there is a tool the pro's use - not planning on getting one now as so close, but be nice to know for future referance.
Edp 67 3 Cars Posted August 18, 2008 The windscreen guys use a wire saw much like a cheese cutter. They force the wire through the rubber seal then attach handles to each end of the wire. Then using a sawing motion go round the glass until you can remove the glass. I wouldn't try and lever the glass as you will crack it.
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted August 18, 2008 I've never seen a saw as above, what I have seen is a tool with a small cranked blade, a handle to steady it, and then a pull handle to provide the force to cut through the sealant. Look at ebay item no 190171694643 to see what I mean.
Paintguy 0 Posted August 18, 2008 Yep, most of the pro's use a tool similar to the one on ebay above (or an air powered version). Some I've met prefer the cheese wire type cutter, and almost all use one of those when access is too tight for the cranked blade type.
