nick9one1 2 Posted August 17, 2008 do 1.9 cams wear out much? I'm looking at swapping the long duration cam i have for a standard one. should i go for a new one? or swap for a 2nd hand? I have read the 1.6 suffers badly from cam wear, but not the 1.9? Cheers, Nick

Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 17, 2008 They are starting to wear on some engine's, You need to remember these are all getting old now so parts will be past there best, Most are useable thou but you must re-shim the tappet's if you change the cam
trialster 0 Posted August 19, 2008 nick and i have just swapped cams so if we need to re shim, could you do it first nick and tell me how much i need to add/take off? only joking! how important is it to reshim? because i cant see there being much difference atall tbh. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted August 19, 2008 Allot so a re-shim is a must in my book, You might be lucky but I'll eat my hat (If I had one)
trialster 0 Posted August 20, 2008 but will there actually be any difference? i thought you only need to re-shim after changing/grinding in valves? with changing a cam, surely the BCD always stays the same?
trialster 0 Posted August 21, 2008 anyone? bcd ever change?
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 21, 2008 what's BCD? cam grinding tolerances, plus factory head line boring differences, and tappet wear, all contribute to quite a vast difference in clearances when you start swapping stuff around. bear in mind that you're talking tenths and hundredths of a MM, and the difference could lead to lack of compression, or the valve not opening much at all. trialster 0 Posted August 21, 2008 bcd - base circle diameter, that part of the cam profile which is opposite to the lobe. i can only see there being need to re-shim if that bcd is different, remember im only changing the cam, valve seats and tappet wear dont really come into it, because they were running fine with the old cam...
