N/s Inner Cv Boot & Hub Nut Socket.

Recommended Posts

sonofsam

Took my wishbones off this afternoon to replace the tired bushes and spotted the inner CV boot is well ripped and

has spilt all it's Grease all up the gearbox, so...

Where's best to get boot kit and what type? , if there are any differences?

Am I going to be able to crack the hub nut off with the car on axle stands at the front?!

and do I need a deep reach socket if I have to put the wheels & 'bones back on to crack the nut off?

Ta,

Sam.

1. I'v allways got CV boots from APD and they're allways good quality ones although i can't remember the particular brand name. Dont buy the cheap ass ones that you wrap around the joint and then glue togeather cause they're, for lack of a better word, bollocks.

2. Yes but you'll need a 20" breaker bar, a good quality 6 sided socket and someone in the car remming the brakes on. This has allways worked for me but dont forget to put the wheel bolts back in the hub to spread the load.

I'v done a giude on replacing CV boots here if it's any use to you:

I always use the AMK stretchy boot kits which you trim to the right size for the appropriate joint but you need the cone tool to fit them.

IMO its much easier to crack the hubnut with the car on its wheels so you can get an assitant to hold the brakes in if needed, short reach socket will do with an extension, obviously you need either 1.9 alloys or soem other make without solid centres.

Thanks Mark & Graham, very helpfull cheers.

Will get down my local motorfactors tommorow to see what they have.

Think I remember seeing a cone type tool in the Haynes manual explaination of CV boot changing?

Dont fancy levering my car of it's stands with a breaker bar though :lol:

Cheers mate. I take it with a stretchy boot & cone tool combo you dont need to split teh driveshaft in half?!

Yep, exactly that, it just stretches over the CV joint.

Slightly off topic.

Does anyone know how you remove a 205 CV joint? Is it the type that has a clip in a groove, so you need to drive it off with good old BFI or does it have a circlip that needs releasing?

I just tap them off with a hammer - shouldn't really need more than a couple of sharp taps, and not full on BFI

Certainly that works for 1.9/309 shafts - never tried 1.6/diesel ones.
