watford1gti 0 Posted August 15, 2008 right, im currently taking the engine out of my miami blue, everything is moving on but the only problem is the driveshaft, im working in the drivers side and i cant get the driveshaft out, is it just a case of giving it a yank, ive tugged it quite hard but dont want to cause any damage, is there any tips or handy hints??? also the passenger one is going to come out, am i gonna come across any problems on this one too?? cheers matt
boombang 2 Posted August 15, 2008 Intermediate bearing on the shaft has two retaining bolts going through the engine mount. These have to be undone enough to twist it. Take a little look at where it goes through the mount, you'll see what I mean.

pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted August 15, 2008 i think i found them, ive taken the nuts all the way off, when you say 'twist it' what are we twisting?? You don't need to take the nuts right the way off but when they are near the end of the thread push them thorugh the housing & turn them 90 or 180' to clear the bearing. The bolts are L shaped so only hold the bearing (or fit into the housing) one way. The bearing will most likely need drifting out of the housing though, I'd be surprised if it just pushed / pulled free. Graham.
Dave_McC 0 Posted August 15, 2008 When I did this, after releasing the L shaped bolts holding the intermediate bearing, like Graham says I had to drift the shaft/bearing out of the housing. There was a "step" on the shaft - I locked a pair of mole grips on the shaft on the gearbox side of the step, and then belted it (on side of mole grips as near to shaft as you can) with a lump hammer. Took a lot of whacking but eventually the shaft came out. Dave
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted August 15, 2008 What about refitting a drive shaft, will that slide into the mount or does it need gently/brutally forcing in? cheers
welshpug 1,657 Posted August 15, 2008 It should just slide in, though if the shaft took some force to release from the housing on removal, the intermediate housing and bearing require a quick clean with some WD40 and emery cloth.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted August 15, 2008 I've never had to clean the housing & mine just slide back in but I always copperslip the outside of the bearing which seems to help althought my driveshafts haven't be left on the car for much more than a year since I rebuilt it so they don't get chance to seize in again. welshpug 1,657 Posted August 15, 2008 I had great difficulty with Gerlewislewis's driveshafts after replacing the clutch, never had it that bad before but the emery cloth treatment made it slide straight in.
watford1gti 0 Posted August 17, 2008 thanks for all the help, ill have a look this week and let you know how i get on, what about the passenger side should i expect any problems with this one? cheers
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted August 17, 2008 Cheers, other way round for me Mr Watford, passenger side just pulls straight out no issues, I have the 'fun' one to do next
DjB 0 Posted August 24, 2008 There is an axle in the final drive that will drop to the bottom of the final drive case if you have both drive shafts out at the same time. So maybe do one side and then the other. Chris
ifcho 0 Posted August 24, 2008 Sometimes I find it easier to take the whole engine mount with the driveshaft off.

VisaGTi16v 1 Posted August 25, 2008 I just took my drivers side one out. Undid the nuts most of the way, pushed them through, rotated 90 degrees then got some mole grips as suggested above around the shaft on the back of the bearing then a few hits with a hammer and it came out. They have only been in there about 18 months so probably not so easy if its been a few years!
