steve@cornwall 100 Posted August 15, 2008 my little 205 has an ignition immob. i guess many other cars have this device also, however i only have 1 fob, i also dont like it at all. how do i remove it whilst keeping the use of my ignition barrel. I dontknow much about electrics, but i dont mind having a go. Most ignition / starter immobilisers can be easily removed by replacing the ignition switch part of the loom (Or just splicing the old one back together - usually only 2 wires which become obvious when all the binding tape is removed) First remove lower dash and lower steering cowl for access. Then remove ignition barrel -1 screw or 8mm bolt on top of barrel, turn ig. switch to position 2, push in retaining lugs that hold the barrel to the underneath of the steering column, pull barrel as far as you can at this point. Follow the path of wiring through the hole in the steering column - it ends in plugs. Depending on the age of the car these will either be easy to get to - on the right under the ecu, or a PITA and routed behind the heater. Unplug and pull free. The barrel is held together with 2 screws which separate the lock mech. from the loom. BEFORE undoing these , put the lock back to "off" position - this will ease re-assembly. now remove screws and separate the loom. As so often put "reverse procedure to re- assemble" but make sure the 3 pointed "cog" from the barrel is lined up properly with the one from the new loom section .If you've removed this yourself from a scrap car and didn't have the keys - the loom section part may be in the wrong position- compare to the one you've removed. It may be necessary to slightly bend the steering lock mech. to fit it all back together - just straighten it out afterwards. and make sure the locating lugs between the lock / loom are all lined up. It's a good idea to do all this before re routing the new loom and checking that the key positions on barrel still do what they should! If not, the 3 pointed "cog" is in the wrong position. once this is done the car should be immobiliser free - check to see it starts properly, then you can remove the rest of the immobiliser wiring (usually just earth and supply) and bin the offending article This is all a lot easier than it sounds and IMO is better than having dodgy joints behind the dash.
