What Is The Max Brake Size On 205's

Recommended Posts

rally_kid

Hey guys, im in the process of building a new rally car and i have loads of ideas floating round in my head as im not sure whats going on it yet.

Base shell is a 1.6 GTi, the plan so far is to run it on the 1.9GTi wheels with full 309 GTi setup (shafts/lower arms/etc) as far as i am aware 283mm is the biggest that you can fit under the 1.9 wheels? is this correct?

Also i have got a set of wider arches being made up, they add about an extra 2 inch onto the front arches, with this extra would it be possible to use bigger wheels and still have the complete turn lock to lock on the wheels?? if so what size would you reccoment for max effectiveness on the 205.

It may make a bit off a different but it will be running an mi engine with 1.6GTi box

... something else thats just opped into my head, will the 1.6 box be ok to have the 309 shafts?

cheers

J :o

Easily & for not to much money yes. I think you can fit bigger than 283mm but they are costly kits.

I don't know if it effects the lock but widest I've heard being fitted are 8J15's iirc, you'll need the wider arches to cover these anyway to keep the car road legal afaik.

Yes, they'll fit straight in.

Graham.

Just fitted 283mm 307 setup, and it fits under 1900 wheels aslong as there are no balancing weights near the caliper.

Thanks lads,

pugtorque . The kits that you say that you can get that are bigger brakes, i take it for these you also need to run wheels that are biggere than 15"?

cheers

when I spoke to AP about this they said they had one of they guys running 308mm bells and rotors on 4 pots, but I think under MO's or similar 15" mind. but then you're staring down the sharp end of £1500+VAT

Yea with the "right" calipers that don't actually sit out much over the disc you can get sizes like that under 15" wheels, I always remmeber a black 205 Mi16 in Max Power (probably around 1998!) that had 308mm discs running standard wheels. But with the usual sliding calipers 285mm is about the max.

The 302mm kits I remember I'm sure still fitted under the 15" wheels but they used four pot calipers, not the standard ones.

Fron just looking through an old PTS catalogue there used to be a 315mm four pot group A kit but it doesn't state if that needs 16" wheels or not but looking at the 306 parts there was a 290mm kit that fits under 15" wheels with four piston open back alloy calipers using standard uprights & hubs. Shame it cost £1350 + vat.

I'm running 300mm brakes now, Hi-Spec calipers under 15" SL 434's, it's actually a little more space, so I think 315mm would go with these calipers

i just about fitted 310mm discs and wilwood four pots in my 15"compomotive CXR's had to grind the corners off the cross bolting for the caliper

from memory wilwood want the diameter of the disc plus 50mm,just measure the inside diameter of the 1.9

wheel in think my CXR's were 365mm and that was about as close as you could get

I have Hi-Spec Racing 4s and 280mm discs. I couldn't go much bigger without slapping off the balancing weights.

But it isn't just the diameter, it's the width getting close to the wheel face.
