Cutting Out When I Back Off On Accelerator

Recommended Posts

lagonda

Car has developed this trouble recently. Doesn't seem to happen when car is cold. Accelerates fine, but then when I slow down, engine will cut out momentarily several times, then settles down OK. It's not the coil as I've tried another one, have also removed fuel pump to check nothing blocking pick-up/filters, also there is no water in the fuel.

I'm suspicious of ignition leads as there's a bit of arcing going on, but wouldn't accelerating be fraught with misfiring if that was the cause? Any ideas?!

If the HT leads are obviously not at their best then this is the place to start, and then if that doesn't cure the fault you can move elsewhere. But it is daft trying to look for other things when you know that one part is not 100% to begin with.

Unfortunately I'm still in France & as far as I know they don't have a GSF equivalent over here, & I'm not paying Peugeot prices only to find it's not the leads!

Anyone any other thoughts, or had a similar problem they've resolved?!

checked all hoses that there is no air leak? Specially the hoses and the MAF leading to the throttle body. Mine cuts out if there is an air leak since air/fuel mixture is not accurate.

I was wondering that, will see if I can detect anything, cheers.

Been unable to find any air leaks, have also swapped tachymetric relay & ignition amplifier ... no improvement, so it's not them either.

Any other suggestions (scrapman tempting!).

It can be throttle switch aka TS.

It arranges the fuel cut off when the pedal is released and over fuel supply in full throttle.

when mine had this problem I found it out to be the ECU temperature sensor. I had the symptoms of poor cold starting and when hot if you came of the accelerator and foot down on the clutch (at a junction) it would stall. there didnt seem to be a pattern to it either, some days it would do it some it wouldnt, but since changing it ive not had a problem.

Thought of that .... only spare sensor I had with me, but changing it made no difference. I'm getting increasingly suspicious it's the ignition leads as when driving in really heavy rain the other day, it was really cutting out badly, & suspect the extra moisture was making the leads more susceptible to tracking. Returning to UK any day now so will be down to GSF to get a new set of leads & hope that resolves the trouble!

SOLVED!

Turned out to be the wire that plugs & is screwed to the side of the distributor, going to the coil & ignition amplifier. New one fitted now & the car is going really well, also regularly getting 33mpg whereas was 31 previously....good-oh!

Hope this helps anyone else with the similar obscure symptoms.
