Mi16 Air Flow Meter

My car is poorly, again lol. Im trying to track down the fault and could do with a little help.

 

Basically its not pulling smooth at all, appears to be overfuelling a little bit and is generally not in full health.

 

Its very lumpy whilst driving, not quite a misfire but almost like its missing a spark/fuel at certain points. Its almost like its held back by something and if you open the throttle a bit more it seems to get through and drive normally again. However it does this pretty much all the way through the rev range. Ive checked most of the ignition stuff, which seems ok and am currently checking the AFM.

 

So Ive been looking through the CAPS program and checking the resistance between the pins. Caps reckons the following.

 

Pins 2&4 Closed flap = 10-200 ohms, Open flap = 1000-2500

Pins 2&3 Closed flap = 8-500 ohms, Open Flap = 1000 -2500

 

Mine

 

Pins 2&4 Closed flap = 40 ohms, Open flap = 734

Pins 2&3 Closed flap = 362 ohms, Open Flap = 380

 

From the drivers website on the article on the injection basics it suggest that between pins 2&4 as the flap opens up the resistance should change smoothly as it opens. Mine does not, its up and down all the all the way through the range and even drops to zero at a couple of points, suggesting to me its started to wear through the track.

 

This kind of makes sense to me, with regards to driving it as the drops in resistance would correspond with the held back feeling.

 

So does it sound like its fubared? Has anyone else tested theirs and have some comparisons etc?

since the fuelling is controlled via the ecu in an mi16 i would have expected to see a linear or at worst a logarithmic result from the readings.

and even drops to zero at a couple of points

 

do you mean 0 ohms as in a short circuit or nothing as in open circuit?

 

open circuit would definately suggest a faulty afm

Ive just checked and when it drops to zero its actually saying OL so overload and therefore open circuit I guess suggesting its a bit buggered. Its obviously not 100% anyway as my Dad measured a spare I have at home for me and whilst the static values were similar when he opened the flap checking the resistance it went up quite smoothly, more so than mine anyway.

OL stands for 'open leads'

Most have these day's along with the 8v ones, You;ve got to remember they are neally all 15+ years old now and will have been well used, The only real option is a new one of A decent ECU

Cheers for that pugnut, as you can tell I dont do elctrcikery lol. Unfortunately proper management is not an option at the moment so I think Im either going to throw on the spare or retrack the spare as per Matts guide and then put it on.

I seem to recall an article a few years ago from NickR, based on re-tracking AFM's but for Porsche 944's. Dunno if anyone still has the link, or if the site is still about!

 

I'm having a few issues myself with the Mi16 AFM, amd seriously considering binning it in favour of aftermarket management and a GTi6 inlet/TB (until the 6 lump gets rebuilt :lol: ). For some very odd reason, on MOT emission check, my 205 came out out at 0.18% which seems vastly low to me. Then when at the Ring last weekend, it was running mega-rich and having trouble starting from hot.

 

Aftermarket management is the way to go, as its hard now to get a decent Mi16 TB without play in the cam/shaft!
