Replacing Solid Brake Lines...?

Right so the pug has a leak on the solid centre section of the brake lines. Hopefully this makes sense...

Now it looks pretty simple to replace, drain the fluid, unscrew at both ends and drop the old line out. Is it that simple? And with new lines can I buy them in sections or have they got to be made up specially? Any special tools needed?

 

I'm using the search function as well as asking this as I'm struggling with results for what I'm after

you're diagram would suggest a 1.6gti if you're Y branch were much further back?

 

1.6 or 1.9?

 

to replace a single section with no hassle requires a lot of luck . the unions will need to seperate without crumbling due to rot or disturbing any other connected line you are not replacing. Also the bleed nipples will need to come loose to enable you to bleed the brakes afterwards.

 

Not something i'm 100 percent on as i normally make my own (not hard but you'll need a flaring tool and a bit of practice) , but i know you can buy complete kits which arent that expensive , i dont think you can buy certain sections but i have in the past taken the old pipes off and taken them to a garage who will make you a replacement. If all you're pipes are the same age then it would be safer to replace them all. All motor factors stock brake pipe and unions too.

 

Basically be prepared to break other parts while replacing . And regardless of whether you have drums or disks on the back be prepared to snap a bleed nipple. I havent snapped one in a long time since is started using an overside socket over the bleed nipple and bashing with a hammer. this seems to disturb the nipple and help with removal. Also use a deep hex socket on the nipples (1/4in drive so you dont overdo it).

thanks mate, I probably should've mentioned, the car is a 1.4 GR with drums on the back

 

I've just been told I'll probably snap a nipple (ooh err) but I'll give the socket bashing a go

 

I think I might have to get a roll and get practising with a flaring tool rather than go ready made. I suppose its the old thing about buying a fish or some fishing gear. One will do for a day, the other will do for life lol

Easy but to complete the back ones properly the tank needs droping slightly really as the pipes run above/to the side of it,

I would say if you broke a nipple it would be cheap to replace but I think the 1.4's run a compensated rear slave cyl's

A 1.4 GR should have a four port 19mm master cylinder with a diagonally split system so if your drawing is accurate of your system someone has changed it for the worse imo.

They do, ame as the other non GTi 205's. Rear cylinders still aren't very expensive though even with them built in. (~£15 from GSF).

 

If you need to replace on front to rear pipe then You might be OK doing just that one but while you've gopt the system apart its possibly worth while spending a bit more money & replacing the fleixble hoses in that line at the same time.

 

If you have to replace a wheel clinder because you snap the bleed nipple off then I'd expect you'll end up doing all the pipes & hose to it.

 

TBH they wheel cylinders are usually that bad for seized nipples though from my experience.
