Increasing Camber On A 309?

Recommended Posts

Rich_p

On a 205 increasing the front camber is a fairly easy task, replace the bottom arms with 309 ones.

For the 309 I am assuming it is not quite so cheap or easy.

Are there any options other than modifing and lengthening the bottom arms?

adjustable top mounts?

if your going to rose joint a 309 arm then you'll have to find a longer shaft i think..

sorry, i dont know what has already been done to your car

im assuming its been lowered already?

i have heard of camber shims..although i dont think they are available for 205s camber shims

It is already lowered on replacement shocks and springs.

thats probably added extra camber. my friend had a mk1 clio lowered about 60mm(maybe more) but the camber was devouring wheel bearings and driveshafts

have a look at those camber shims.. i dont know if they are any good, as i dont know of anyone who has used them. they may be worth a try though. and as Bren says how about those adjustable top mounts..or do they only work with certain struts (billies??)??

Those camber shims are completely unsuitable, as they are for VWs with bolt on stub axle assemblies, and are for rear only. Indeed they wouldnt even work on a 205/309 rear beam as you would need to machine the hole that the stub pin presses into.

Your options for camber gain are eccentric top mounts or longer bottom arms. Personally id go for the eccentric top mounts (although you will probably need coilovers for these), as then you can dial in some caster, which is morre useful than static camber imo.

they do loads of other cars apart from VWs just not peugeot. im no expert on this, but i thought that just maybe, theres something else on the market..SIMILAR that could work with a 205/309...

ive heard that with 'some' of the adjustable top mounts, when you adjust either the castor or camber..it can pull the other out of it's setting ? im sure the topic is on here somewhere

I used 306 wishbones on my 309 Trio. Sounds easy, but it isn't!! It requires quite alot of subframe fabrication (forget the 306 subframe, it's nowhere near) and notching of the chassis legs. The rack arms needed changing to 306 ones and the shafts were fabricated.

I used it principally to widen the track and we induced a bit more castor/lengthened the wheelbase at the same time, which is more effective overall IMO than increasing camber, certainly if nice handling and good traction is the priority. I used eccentric top mounts rotated outwards fully outwards to minimise the camber, which ended up just over 1 degree like that. It needed a bit more work to dial out the bump steer you always get from lowering on these, but apart from that it was brilliant, exaggerated 309 handling with any trace of understeer entirely removed!

Sounds fantastic Sandy, I know in you case the fabricated shafts were a necessity but if one was staying PSA with the gearbox would 405/306 shafts suffice?

306 shafts would be about right, the tubular GTI6/TD ones are very strong and durable.

Afraid not, you simply wont get camber adjustment on the rear without machining the arms or sourcing some from a different PSA model (306, ZX etc). The design of them makes it completely impossible. I suppose you could redesign them, but thats even more work...

Yes the top mounts you are refferring to are the 'standard' type eccentric mounts, where the shock absorber top nut is mounted off centre of the outer circle of holes that attach the mount to the car. Other types are available with seperate planes of adjustment for caster and camber, these work well and are the ideal solution, but are generally a bit more expensive.
