Will This Master Cylinder Be Ok?

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

I got this MC from GSF about a week ago. Asked for a 20.6mm, and they guy said the part number had been superceded by one for a Golf that is a 20mm unit instead. OK, so I took it.

It does fit fine, but the fat bit (the cylinder? :P ) is a different shape. So since I won't be able to test it for a few weeks yet, I just thought I'd check if any of you know if it will be OK or not. I've checked the part number on the website and it does come up for the 205 20.6mm MC, so I'd expect it to be fit for purpose.

Base models etc only have a 19mm mc so it should be OK imo, you might have a slightly longer pedal but I seriously doubt you'll notice a difference though.

If you put the part number listed for the 205 20.6mm mc (65269) into the part number search on the GSF website though it does bring up a MK!! Golf 20mm mc.

  • 65269 BRAKE MASTER CYL-20mm(BQ) G2 1.05 8/83 >7/87 31.25

The cylinder is just the metal part, the fat it is the reservoir if thats what you mean.

Fit's and works fine, as with everything 205, not 2 are alike anyway

Graham - that is the part number they've supplied. It's the fact that the bit that goes inside the servo is slightly longer and does not have the cut outs at the sides that had me wondering if it would make any difference. But I guess not.

I'll be using 306 Girling 266mm front brake set up. Think (IIRC) that they have 54 stamped on them, so I assume that is the piston size. Anyway, I was going to get a slightly bigger MC but couldn't find any that weren't listed for an ABS application, so didn't bother (but having read further I suspect I probably could have used one). The original 1.6 MC is a 19mm one isn't it? So it's still a little bigger than before. Will just suck it and see.

Im sure it will work fine as long as it fits ok. Ive got a 405 MI one on my car (think thats 20.6mm?) and ive got a nice firm pedal even with my 4 pots.

You may need to adjust the servo rod length though.

Both 1.6 and 1.9 GTi MC's are 20.6mm - it's base model 205's that have a 19mm MC.

With the new calipers with larger pistons you'll likely find that pedal travel is a little longer than before, but should still be fine in my experience - in an ideal world you'd want something around a 22mm MC to keep the pedal travel the same (I *think* some of the 405 ones are 22mm and 4 port, but I've never checked sizes and fitment personally)

They are, I've got one here somewhere, new & unused I gained rom NickR when he was messing around with his brakes but never fitted before he sold up.

IIRC its for a 4x4 405, 22.2mm four port mc that fits straight onto the 205 servo.

I found a 19mm MC on my mates 1.9 and it had been working fine, pedal travel was well within normal bounds.
